The #BigChocoSale is here! But not as you think.. read on to learn more about how the chocolate industry has hit new lows in 2021 and find out how you can help.
On 1st October an 18.5% drop in the main crop price of cocoa in Ivory Coast was announced which will lead to millions of smallholder farmers falling further below the poverty line. It’s not a sale it’s #TheBigChocoSteal (2/7)
This fall in income for cocoa farmers will likely lead to increased inequality and vulnerability including more children working illegally on cocoa farms (3/7)
Meanwhile, you, the consumer will likely pay the same, but it’s expected that big chocolate company profits will increase significantly (4/7)
It is estimated that if big chocolate companies paid farmers in Ivory Coast enough to earn a living income it would cost $1bn – only 0.7% of global chocolate revenues (5/7)
We want all chocolate companies to match the price Tony’s pays for cocoa – the Living Income Reference Price developed with @FairtradeUK - to enable cocoa farmers to earn a living income and get out of the poverty – the root cause of illegal labour (6/7)
Support farmers by sharing news of #TheBigChocoSteal and ask chocolate companies to pay more, not less, for cocoa: TAG your favourite brands below and ask them to price match Tony's by paying the Living Income Reference Price for their cocoa. #TheCocoaPriceMatch (7/7]
