Arteta is a phenomenal tactician but Arsenal having just over 40% of the ball against Brighton is not good enough. Below, I analyse his flawed tactics against 3 at the back teams and why Arsenal cannot keep the ball in those games before ultimately getting dominated.

THREAD.
Interestingly, Arsenal had 71% of the ball after the first 10 minutes - they didn't just play out from the back - they partook in a combination of both direct and short play and were successful with both thanks to their good technical quality and Ramsdale's long kicking.
Ramsdale's kicking enabled Arsenal to win second balls in areas deep in Brighton's, which is good. This is a position of control and strength for Arsenal because they're winning the ball back high as opposed to losing it in their own third and being forced to recover.
Pressing wise, Arsenal were forcing Brighton to go long and play risky passes because Arsenal were incredibly frantic because the game just started and their energy was high, as seen below.
However, the overload in Brighton's build-up enabled them to dominate the ball from this point (minute 10) on. Between minute 12 and 22 Brighton had 63% possession, and this marked the swing of the tide in the games dynamics and overall control for each team.
Once Brighton got their foot on the ball, Arsenal never got it back, & that's because Brighton had a spare man in the build-up vs Arsenal's subpar press. Brighton had a constant 5v4 when building play, & that's excluding Sanchez in goal who Brighton successfully used to circulate
Not only did Brighton have an overload in the build-up, but the vertical compactness with Arsenal's block wasn't tight enough. Ben White and Gabriel lacked aggression within their positioning so Brighton often had spare men between the lines.

This had a number of implications.
Ideally, in a good pressing system, Partey will push on & press the opposition pivot here as he is a clear pressing trigger. However, as seen in the same video, he was conscious of the spare man between the lines behind him so couldn't press high. This is White & Gabriel's fault.
Klopp constantly talks about how the last line must be aggressive within their positioning so the entire block is compact and the space in which the opposition have to play in is reduced. Arsenal weren't vertically compact, so Partey couldn't press high.
This means that Brighton can 1) play a simple short pass into the pivot to play out of Arsenal's subpar press or 2) play directly to the spare man between the lines. Either way, Arsenal are getting forced back because their press wasn't good enough.
For me, this is primarily Gabriel's fault. He was signed to be the leader in that backline so controlling where the line operates is one of his primary tasks. Again, this is also imperative for Arteta to drill into him and the defensive line, so both are certainly at fault here.
Look at Partey here. His body position is one that is conservative and lacks aggression in the sense that he's more concerned about what's behind him as opposed to pressing what should be his trigger which is the opposition pivot. Again, the defensive line is too deep.
So Arsenal's press was outmatched numbers wise and wasn't vertically compact. The reality of the situation is Brighton dominated the ball against Arsenal with the likes of Dan Burn and Shane Duffy in the team. That’s not good enough from Arteta.
The same thing happened against Chelsea and Chelsea dismantled Arteta's Arsenal on the day. There is a clear 5v4 in the build-up here, and this was how Chelsea directly exposed and scored against Arsenal on a number of occasions.
However, bizarrely, Arteta matched up against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last season & completely stifled their game pressing wise before ultimately beating Chelsea at the Bridge on that day, so for him to make this error twice after beating Chelsea with it is utterly illogical.
Crucially, in the below pictures Holding (Arsenal's CB) was right behind Mason Mount ready to press high. Also, Arsenal were not outnumbered numbers wise either. They matched Chelsea up man for man. This was a successful & high quality tactic which should be used vs 3 ATB teams.
Arteta has shown before that he can implement a high quality press against a 3 at the back team but he must change or improve upon his current system to revert to those previous successes to make Arsenal less vulnerable in these games.
Brighton, on the other hand, showed Arteta who was boss on the day by matching up man-for-man when Arsenal had goal kicks. This structure forced Ramsdale to go long more often than he and Arteta would have liked - Brighton, however, had no problem playing out from the back.
As I maintain at the start of the thread, Arteta is a top tactician but has made glaring errors against 3 at the back teams on a number of occasions this season despite implementing a successful approach against Chelsea last ssn. This needs to improve to give Arsenal more control
Improved technical levels would enable Arteta's men to be more dominant on these games but Arsenal's XI was more than good enough to control the game vs Brighton, yet they didn't, and the team with D. Burn and S. Duffy did with the ball, which is unacceptable.

He must improve.

Liverpool are a special team who are massively going under the radar. They are easily the most complete team in the world. I picked them to win the league at the start of the year because of this, but I think they're owed credit that they're not receciving at this time.

THREAD.
If you block space in a deeper block, they’ll sustain pressure & find a way through. If you press high they’ll pick you off in transition. If you play out from the back they’ll press you off the park. If you go long they’ll dominate duels & exploit you in transition.
Liverpool can kill every team in every way possible. They have one of the most well-drilled and unique presses in world football within Klopp's revolutionary, never-seen-before, narrow 4-3-3 off-ball high press. It doesn't matter how good you are, good luck playing out of this.

Solskjaer should've forced Pogba out. He's too big of a character to leave out and causes this team massive balance issues. He doesn't work hard enough and doesn't produce sufficient output or work ethic in the front four. He's also careless on the ball - Utd need a balancer.
Put a Gini Wijnaldum or a Kovacic or any sort of positionally disciplined player into United's pivot alongside McTominay within Solskjaer's standard 4-2-3-1 which is balanced on and off the ball and they're capable of winning the league. They already have the attackers.
Pogba, on the other hand, is the opposite of that. The complete opposite. He also doesn't work hard enough in the front four and doesn't produce sufficient output. He kills this team, but it's Solskjaer's fault for keeping him and forcing all the stars into this horrid 4-3-3.

Solskjaer's conservative positioning of the fullbacks within this 4-3-3 is very much so similar to the way City set up, and it enables 5 players to be behind the ball in defensive transition which is good. However, the spacing of the players isn't good. The midfield is empty.
Players have to defend in isolation as opposed to together in a cohesive unit because the spacing of the players doesn't enable them to be in close proximity. It's a 4-1 shape in which there's large spaces either side of McTominay. A 3-2 or even a 2-2 shape is more balanced.
Again, in possession, they miss their overload in the build-up as the players are further spread apart (only 1 player in the pivot), so they're more easily pressed. Pressing wise hasn't been amazing either with man-marking in MF but the fullbacks haven't supported the wingers.

PSG will always concede possession against better pressing teams because they quite simply don't press in settled situations with any reliability, structure or intensity due to the nature of Mbappé, Neymar & Messi so Poch needs to make sure their low block is as compact as can be
He's not achieving that with this 4-3 defensive shape. It's far too susceptible to switches of play. However, just as importantly, a 3-4-3 for example would combat that issue whilst also creating an overload in the build-up AND getting Neymar, Messi & Mbappe closer together.
Within a 3-4-3 PSG would have a bigger overload in the build-up combined with players in closer proximity within the build-up & the front 3 closer together. As such, they could use their technical level to play out more often & more successfully - this way they could press more!

How Arteta and Arsenal dismantled Nuno's Spurs inside 33 minutes...

Thread:
Arsenal were set up inside a 3-2 build-up with Tomiyasu as a third CB. Previously, against Burnley, the LCM role was a fluid role where Ø moved high and between the lines. However, on my podcast, I suggested that Arteta should revert to a 3-2 build-up with Xhaka in the pivot
because it improves the overload in the build-up & compactness in defensive transition but also because Xhaka adds a calming temperament that Arsenal need in possession amongst all of their youthful signings. So, the build-up dismantled Spurs' press as a result of that overload.

Fabinho is the perfect midfielder. His pass selection is absolutely second to none - rarely does he ever force line breaking or over the top passes but when he does it's at the right time & secondly it's in risk free zones where Liverpool can counterpress if the pass is misplaced
However, more importantly, he excels at the basics of midfield play which is of vital importance. Fabinho is constantly available to receive & is so difficult to dispossess. His passes selection is risk averse but also progressive thanks to his elite temperament & technical level
Fabinho is also comfortable receiving at any angle and playing to the left or right. Those lofted passes out to the fullbacks or wide players within simple circulation is absolutely imperative to Liverpool's possession play. He's even more reliable than Thiago in that regard.
