Psaki on President's virtual meeting today with House progressives on the BIF & BBB "which includes the recognition that this package is going to be smaller than originally proposed. And what he wants to hear from them is what their priorities are, what their bottom lines are."

President Biden from WH: "Raising the debt limit is about paying off our old debts. There's nothing to do with any new spending being considered. Nothing to do with my plan for infrastructure or Building Back Better. Zero. Zero. Both of which I might add are paid for."
Biden on Senate GOP:"They're threatening to use a procedural power called the filibuster,meaning that we have to get 60 votes,not 50 votes,to increase debt limit. This would block Democrats from mtg our obligations & responsibilities to prevent Congress from raising debt limit."
Biden: "Let's be clear: Not only are Republicans refusing to do their job, they're threatening to use their power to prevent us from doing our job, saving the economy from a catastrophic event. I think, quite frankly, it's hypocritical, dangerous and disgraceful."

McConnell writes to President Biden 2 wks ahead of debt limit deadline to "express concern that our nation is sleepwalking toward significant & unavoidable danger because of confusion & inaction from Speaker of the House & Senate Democratic Ldr concerning basic governing duties."
McConnell again calls on Democrats to use reconciliation to raise debt ceiling before Oct. 18th deadline: "We have no list of demands. For two and a half months, we have simply warned that since your party wishes to govern alone, it must handle the debt limit as alone as well."
McConnell: "Republicans will not build Speaker Pelosi and Leader Schumer a shortcut around procedural hurdles they can clear on their own so they have a more convenient path to jam us with a partisan taxing and spending spree."

Schumer to Senate Democrats this morning 2 weeks ahead of the default deadline: “We must get a bill to the President’s desk dealing with the debt limit by the end of the week. Period. We do not have the luxury of waiting until October 18th.” democrats.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/…
Schumer: “If Leader McConnell and his colleagues continue to obstruct our ability to quickly resolve the debt issue, the Senate will likely be forced to remain in session over this weekend, and possibly through the recess, to finish our work. Please plan accordingly.”
Schumer on BIF & BBB new deadline:”The Bipartisan Infrastructure bill is also a 5-year reauthorization of the Highway Trust Fund,which means that our new legislative goal must be to enact that bill & the Build Back Better Act before the new expiration date at the end of October.”
