This entire Manchin/Sinema debacle has been turned into entertainment by a media profiting off chaos and dysfunction.

This isn't a game. People are suffering.

We have to recognize how this ugly business has very real consequences.

1/

jaredyatessexton.substack.com/p/this-isnt-a-…
From the very beginning, Manchin and Sinema have been taking advantage of how our media treats politics like spectacle and entertainment, using their dissenting votes as an opportunity to gain attention and fundraise through lobbyists looking to affect their decisions.

2/
By focusing on incidents like Sinema being followed into a bathroom, attention has been shifted from the legislation which will actually make lives better for living, breathing people into mini-scenes of morality and ethics.

This is how our media works.

3/
A visually arresting scene, like a millionaire senator looking down from his extravagant yacht, seizes the attention of the moment, distracting from whether or not we're going to actually start investing in the lives of Americans, and changing the conversation entirely.

4/
Meanwhile, the tension of the moment is exploited for shows, segments, articles, clicks, retweets, sketches, memes, all of it an industry that drains any of the actual substance of the debate from the topic and replaces it with ready-for-media storylines.

5/
Our current political environment is reduced by media to a war among god-like figures, heroes and villains who, based on their warring, can determine the fate of the people.

This changes focus from our representative bodies as representatives to simplified power plays.

6/
Because this is spectacle, our representatives are turned into characters.

Manchin becomes a hand-wringing moderate concerned with budgets and deficits, a veteran killjoy upon whom everybody waits for his deliberation.

All the while he simply a stooge for fossil fuel.

7/
Sinema gets turned into an unpredictable wildcard, which all but obscures the fact that she's fundraising off corporate lobbyists who want her to kill any legislation that will actually help regular American citizens.

The intent gets lost behind the infotainment sheen.

8/
While our media focuses attention on power plays, sweeping dramas, and characters, figures like Mitch McConnell handle the very real machinery of power to ensure that government functions only as a tool to redistribute wealth from the bottom up.

9/
Because we emphasize drama and spectacle, we lose sight of what's actually at stake.

A nation crumbling by the day after decades of cruel austerity. Human beings struggling to make ends meet and falling behind. Shortened, more miserable lives that could be helped.

10/
Substantive, real issues like climate change, education, infrastructure, the social safety net don't make for compelling TV or draw as much attention.

This means they get ignored, forgotten, all in favor of featuring these heroes and villains, saviors and devils.

11/
The history of how we got here is instructive. Emerging media like television shifted politics toward outsized personalities and dramatic moments of tension and confrontations.

From the very beginning it began to change the nature of our politics away from substance.

12/
The modern era of spectacle and politics as entertainments was ushered in by Ronald Reagan, a complete hack of an actor who presented to the media ready-made entertainment in order to boost their ratings, advertising dollars, and attract viewers/consumers.

13/
Reagan had no idea what he was talking about any given time, but he was able to serve up politics as a TV show while think-tanks funded by the wealthiest Americans took over politics and ensured all policy and energy would move toward enriching themselves.

14/
All along, cable news networks and emerging media ensured that political debate was transformed into political combat.

Like Reagan, substance didn't matter. It was about personalities. It was about tense moments. It removed politics completely from reality.

15/
Understanding this, it isn't hard to grasp how a complete fraud of a reality TV host became president.

Donald Trump personified politics as entertainment. He had no actual understanding, but was more than willing to create ratings-driving controversy.

16/
The problem wasn't just that Trump was chaotic and destructive. It was that our media was entirely tuned to profit off of this dysfunction.

Channels, papers, websites, all of them profited wildly off Trump while America and its people suffered.

17/
Our entire media infrastructure is explicitly wired to prioritize destructive actors and forward dangerous ideas.

This is why social media traffics misinformation/conspiracy theories/radicalizing concepts. It's good for business.

In fact, it's GREAT for business.

18/
Trump capitalized off a media complex that was addicted to his antics and chaos, using their need for profit to his advantage.

This is the end result of an entire ecosystem focused on controversy, characters, and spectacle as a replacement for politics.

19/
And it doesn't end with Trump. He spawned an entire new generation of attention-seeking, controversy-sells grifters like Marjorie Taylor Greene, who have no actual agenda other than agitating in order to go viral or make themselves the newest "character" in the show.

20/
The Republican Party is overflowing now with Trumpist grifters, all of them rejecting politics as a means of making lives better in order to profit off their controversy and pursue, with reckless abandon, profile-raising stunts that literally hurt the nation.

21/
And what's more, as long as the media prioritizes spectacle and entertainment, these grifters and wanna-be reality stars will only push the envelope with more and more dangerous stunts, including adopting fascistic ideas and threatening the rule of law and democracy.

22/
If we're going to fix this, we have to reject the culture of spectacle and entertainment, understand that these people AREN'T CHARACTERS, they're supposed to be public servants and they're dealing with very real and very important issues of life or death.

23/

If anything is going to change, national races have to start building around the concept of movements. All this lipservice about cooperation and bipartisanship on the Left has to go out the window.

Stated plans. Mandates. Broad, sweeping wins making governance possible.
And, to do this, Democrats have to at least start moving beyond neoliberalism and reject these anchors who reinforce austerity and special interests.

This, of course, isn’t something this party is capable of doing as it’s constituted. Which makes all this practically moot.
The smart move here is for Biden to use this absolute catastrophe and say to the people, look at this mess, I need more people to achieve X, Y, and Z. The problem is putting together that agenda, being bold, and accepting the GOP will call it tyranny and socialism.

We need to talk about this "debate" in Congress over necessary investment in infrastructure and the social safety net.

This system is EXPLICITLY set up to deny Americans everything in order to redistribute money to the wealthiest few.

I've talked recently about Manchin and Sinema and how they are bought and sold by special interests in order to derail anything that might help Americans.

What they represent is a massive effort to keep redistributing our wealth from the bottom up.

As Congress continues pushing this gridlock into more and more ludicrous directions, it's important to remember what they agree upon.

What "consensus" they find.

And that's the military, or rather, the business of using "defense" as a means of redistributing wealth.

It helps to remember, regardless of the perception that they’re all politically left-leaning, that our media is a wealthy class with incredible wealth and power and so it is naturally, and even sometimes unconsciously, terrified of the status quo being interrupted.
Throughout history we see it happen over and over again. Even liberals and leftists can grow terrified of their established wealth and power and influence declining should things change, and so they’ll often partner with the Far Right to put down reformers.
When the “liberal media” spends so much time talking to Trump supporters and GOP members who promote conspiracies or worrying over “cancel culture,” remember they have a financial and political stake in things staying the same and in protecting their own wealth and positions.

It’s incredible that the Democratic Party can’t even come together to pass common-sense, firmly moderate and necessary legislation to begin making up for decades’ worth of austerity and inaction and you’ve still got Republicans calling them communists with a straight face.
The whole trend of labeling moderate Democrats as socialists and communists goes back to the 1990’s, when Newt Gingrich realized Clinton and the Republicans were in almost complete economic agreement and then just said screw it, keep calling them radicals.

And it totally worked.
It would be pretty incredible to see what the GOP would do with actual socialists or communists. You have to imagine their circuit boards would just spazz out and shoot so many sparks. And meanwhile, center-right to centrist Democrats are painted with the hammer and sickle.

The whole point of promoting disinformation and conspiracy theories through propaganda is to both keep your base from understanding present political conditions and radicalizing them so that they will intimidate political opponents or use violence against them.
People want to keep talking about the GOP's spreading of conspiracy theories as if it's just about winning elections.

That's only part of it. This whole project is about undermining democratic institutions altogether and responding to a changing electorate via violence.
Republicans have based their entire electorate strategy on white supremacist paranoia, a self-destructive plan.

Now, backed into a corner and facing the consequences of their actions, they're choosing to eradicate liberal democracy in order to maintain power.

It literally doesn’t matter that the Arizona recount effort backfired empirically. The entire purpose was to forward the Big Lie, continue the destruction of faith in democracy, and provide the Right an opportunity to learn about voting systems and their vulnerabilities.
When all is said and done, we’ll look back on the Arizona recount as the first of many attempts by the Right to overturn an election loss via weaponized conspiracy theories and giant, mobilized administrative efforts.
By convincing their voters the 2020 Election was stolen, and by capitalizing on liberal apathy, the GOP leveraged the conspiracy theory to gain unprecedented access to voter rolls and ballot systems, creating an opportunity to manipulate them going forward.
