Perhaps one of the deeper ironies of ableism in medicine leading to assumptions of medical fraud, is that peoples latent media saturated ableism leads people faking medical conditions to do so in highly obvious ways
Media portrayals are also a large cause. You’d be surprised at how many people tried to fake anterograde amnesia based off its portrayal in Memento.
There’s a reason the people who do convincing medical fraud often have a background in medicine, or in some cases (like with drug addiction resulting from treatment for an injury), actually had the underlying condition but eventually recovered
Also mind you I have basically no moral qualms with medical fraud as long as scarce resources aren’t at issue. Idc if people lie to get drugs bc drugs should be legal, and idc if people lie to get out of prison because people shouldn’t go to prison.
But, just for me, having had vastly too many experiences where I really had a condition but wasn’t believed, I don’t want to tempt fate myself, personally.
The illegal market for ADHD meds exists because ADHD meds are over prescribed to people who don’t need them and are systematically denied to people that do. Same is more or less true for opiates and many other psychiatrics & narcotics.
Anyway the thing which prompted this thread was watching like 30 videos of different middle class suburban white women faking adverse vaccine responses and people throwing money at them. Shit’s wild.

I read an anthropologist who argues that with the decline in the relevance of the incest taboo, the age gap has risen to take its place as the vehemently felt & enforced constitutive & structuring taboo around socio-sexuality and more & more I think they were right.
For example, one thing I see people say is that an age difference could be the same as a "sibling" or a "parent", or they'll say, w that difference when I was just a kid they would have been in X grade which reminds them of a familial relationship they had or felt like they had
But anyway the incest taboo in western societies became increasingly and substantially stricter over time, to the point where the Catholic Church banned marriages up to the 4th degree (1/16th shared) and then later to the * 7th degree (< 1/128th shared)
that Kissinger’s death was celebrated but Carter’s is not is a tragedy of historical illiteracy. Carter’s legacy is millions of dead, Soviet collapse & famine, born again evangelism in US politics, the rise of neoliberal economics, & foreign interventionist liberalism
1. Carter was the first major president to legitimate born again Christianity as the basis for politics, and the second to last of the southern democrat tradition among presidents (Clinton 1 being the last).
2. Carter appointed Paul Volcker and oversaw the rise of monetarism & neoliberalism as ideologies in the federal reserve and treasury. He established the new relation between the ‘fiscally sound’ economists with the Democrats, beginning the end of Dems as a labor party
The Irish were basically the foot soldiers of the expansion of Anglo colonialism and as contemporary historians of Irish Nationalism/Republicanism will tell you, the longevity/success of those movements depended in large part on migration, colonies & diasporas (‘greater Ireland’)
And today, Ireland is one of the richest states IN THE WORLD, entirely due to the fact that it functions as: 1. Financial intermediary between US, or UK,with continental EU 2. It acts as a kind of international Delaware, a repository of ghost corporate registrations
As Khalidi argues, this seemingly ever present overly confident attitude, as an ideology & frame for action, plays a substantial role in the failures of the Palestinian National Movement. People have been saying this kind of thing for 100 years.
There was a point a year or two ago when some genuinely new tactical developments seemed to be growing in the West Bank, based around decentralized networked resistance of affinity groups, focusing on concrete tactical aims, local power, and building of civil society
If this had been pursued it may have actually signaled the beginning of the end , because that kind of movement would be very difficult to control with military and police power, would be rendered the settlements in WB undefendable & eventually could do real economic damage
The most awkward radical silence in the U.S. is on the drug war.
It is implicated directly & causally in 100s of Ks to millions of violent deaths.
Indirectly causally linked to millions more violent deaths & to an even greater number of ‘non violent’ deaths.
And beyond that it is indirectly & more marginally a catalyst in still further.
On top of that it is linked to incalculable imprisonment, torture, bodily injury, as well as to egregious to economic inequality.
The role it plays in colonial land seizure is extreme.
The refugees and internally displaced created by it is in the thousands in every country in which it exists. And that doesn’t include the proportion excluded even tho they Meet the definition nor does it include the millions of people & their descendants displaced by its violence
If polling results are to be believed then the two stakeholder groups whose views are most similar on Israel Palestine are Palestinians who are citizens of Israel, and Jews who are not. Both by something like 4:1 support two state solution, 10-20% 1 state, & 0% expulsion etc
While if Palestine Pulse polls are to be believed Israeli Jews and Palestinians in West Bank and Gaza are mirror images—50% of Israeli Jews & 40% of Palestinians support 2SS,14% of IJs & 10% of Ps support 1SS, and 25% IJ & 30% of Ps chose polled options ‘expulsion’ or ‘apartheid’
A majority of diaspora Jews and Palestinians in Israel identify with the left, a majority of Israeli Jews and Palestinians in West Bank and Gaza identify with the right or religious parties
