#ibpsmosa cry the Kannada activists. To give company to them, we have politicians and certain publications like Vijaya Karnataka from the stables of Toilet Paper of India who fan the flames.

But what is this #ibpsmosa ?

1/n
Is it really discriminating against ALL the Kannadigaru, as it is made out to be? What are the demands of Kannadigaru and whether these demands are beneficial to the larger section of Kannada population? I examine each one of them in the following tweets.

2/n
In the recently announced IBPS exams, there are about 7800+ vacancies, of which Karnataka accounts for about 450+. This is about 5.75% of the overall vacancies. In the past too, this percentage was at about the same level.

3/n
So what are the grouses against the current system of exams?

1. No domicile clause as it existed before 2014.
2. Learning Kannada as a subject till 10th or 12th to be eligible for jobs in Karnataka.
3. Exams are conducted only in English and Hindi, neglecting Kannada.

4/n
Let us examine them to see if they are beneficial to Kannadigaru.

1. Domicile clause. One must have spent X number of years in Kar to be eligible for jobs in Karnataka. On the face of it, it looks appealing. But if we implement this, other states too will do the same.
5/n
2. Learning Kannada as a subject. Nothing prevents the other states to implement tbe rule that the candidates should have studied the language of the state for the jobs.

These two clauses, taken together, means we will have only 5-6% of the jobs open for Kannadigaru.

6/n
Whereas, ideally, with right kind of training, we have the ability to get more than 10-15% of the jobs across India. Unfortunately, this means hard work and no one is willing to do it. Easy to blame the exams than do hard work.

7/n
3. The third part, exams being conducted only in English and Hindi, things have changed this time. The exams will also be in Kannada and let's see the results after this is over.

8/n
Earlier too, having the exams only in English should not have been a problem. To know why, one must understand the scheme of exams.

IBPS is a two part exam. Preliminary and Finals.

In prelims there are 100 questions. English-30. Numerical ability-35. Reasoning ability-35.

8/n
Now it is clear that English questions can't be in Kannada. Of the other two, numbers are the same, whether in English or Kannada. That takes about 65 questions out of fray. The remaining 35, are we complaining that only because these are in English, we are losing out?

9/n
Coming to the Mains/Finals, again there are about 150-200 questions, depending on the pattern. The subjects are English, Computers, Data interpretation and Analysis, General economy and banking awareness.

10/n
Here too, English cannot happen in Kannada. We all study computers in English. Infact in the software companies of Bangalore, there are thousands of engineers who have studied in Kannada medium till 10th and are doing brilliantly well! If they can do it, rest can too.

11/n
As regards the General Awareness, here is a sample question asked in Feb 21 exam
Australian Open will is held at which ground?

Questions are as simple as this and anyone with a reasonable reading of newspapers will crack this.

12/n
So one thing is clear. The exam pattern by itself is not the problem. Also, please note this. The change happened in 2014. If after 7 years in the new pattern, if we are still saying #ibpsmosa then there is something wrong with us!

13/n
Coming back to the domicile clause, even here Kannadigaru will be shortchanged. There are Tamils, Telugus n MalayaLis who have been staying in Karnataka for generations. They will use the domicile quota to the disadvantage of Kannadigaru. Is this okay?

14/n
Let us also look at another aspect. Cut off marks to get selected. The Kannada activists taunt Hindi states as 'bimaru' states. But they have the higher cut off as compared to Karnataka, meaning students score higher marks there as compared to here

15/n
This low cut off in Karnataka is an indication of the quality of ppl writing the exams.

And here is where we are losing out big time.

Let me explain.

16/n
As a Chartered Accountant, I have gone to several colleges in Blore n outside, talking to students on career opportunities. I can say this with conviction that banking jobs, specially the nationalised ones, are not a priority for bulk of the students.

17/n
Back in 70s, 80s n even in 90s, this was not the situation. Owing to lack of private sector jobs, every merit student took up BSRB exams back then and because Kannadigaru are by nature intelligent, they were able to crack the simple test and get jobs.

18/n
This is the reason why we could find so many Kannadigaru in Banking jobs back then.

The software industry changed this equation. Suddenly, the bright amongst us chose to go n work in that field because of the obvious benefits.

19/n
Add to this the boom in the private sector jobs in Karnataka/Blore with higher salaries and suddenly the bank jobs lost their sheen. Even those who chose banking sector, the opportunities in Pvt sector banks were enormous.

20/n
What made this all the more attractive was these jobs came without the burden of reservation! Thus they attracted the best of the talent.
Situation was not like this in other parts of nation. Lack of Pvt sector jobs meant even the best brains wrote these exams.

21/n
And cracked the exams easily and got into banking jobs. Over a period of time, the workforce was filled with them. The transfer policy of the banks made them posted in other parts of the country. That is the reason why we are seeing them in our state too.

22/n
Unfortunately, we are still not addressing the problem the right way. Instead of improving the ability of the job aspirants, we are demanding domicile quota, which is another form of reservation. No good ever happens from this.

23/n
Our activists, be it on twitter or outside, seem to think bad mouthing Hindi will solve the problems. They are more focused on blackening hindi boards than anything else. It may make them look like heroes in their ecosystem but will do nothing to the cause of job aspirants.

24/n
It is here that organisations like @karave_KRV can play a very important role. By creating platforms to educate the youth who are interested in taking up these exams. Remember Super 30 of Bihar? One man's determination made 100s of ordinary children get into IITs.

25/n
We should be focusing something on those lines, on a bigger scale. It will not be easy. It takes hard work, it needs organisational support, it will not give immediate results. But this is the only way to make sure our future generations are in good jobs.
