On 8th November 1998, Late. SK Sinha, Governor of Assam, submitted a report on illegal immigration to Assam to the President of India. In that report, he mentioned that the large-scale illegal migration from BAN over several decades has been altering the demographic complexion.

The Committee for Protection of Land Rights of Indigenous People of Assam submitted their report on 30th December 2017.

In the report, they have categorically mentioned serious threats to the land right of the indigenous people of Assam and their very identity.

In 2018, Government in response to an RTI query has revealed.
Close to 4 lakh hectares of forest land has been encroached upon in Assam, including national parks such as the World Heritage Site of Manas, reserve forests, and numerous wildlife sanctuaries.

RTI application, identified as many as 26 out of 33 districts in the northeastern state that have suffered encroachment. The total encroachment adds up to 3,87,885 hectares which is 22 percent out of the total of 17,36,301 hectares of the state's forest cover.

Now, total of 49 Lakh Bighas/6652 Km2 of land is under encroachment across assam. Includes 3,172 km2 of forest land.
