Cold-emails to profs aren’t the only emails you’re going to send for graduate school applications.

This is a list of people you must email in the journey of your applications

A thread 🧵

@baba_Omoloro @Okafor_SC @Oludeewon @PhDfriendSana @OpenAcademics @AaronAkpuPhilip 💪🏼🔁
• Program/Department Chairperson 🤵‍♀️🤵

You can ask them a couple of crucial things like:

• The culture/atmosphere of the program

• Mental health support resources

• Grievance/Complaints redressal

You can talk about why you are particularly interested in this prog.
This will increase the chances that not only your prof, but also the chair of the program will remember you from before during the selection process.

This is a positive thing for your application 💪🏼

• Graduate school coordinator:

Ask them about-

• Fee waivers 📝
• Campus tours (online/offline) 🏫

• Students clubs & associations in college you can join for free. 🕺

• Networking opportunities 👯

• Campus jobs to earn extra money 💴

• External funding opportunities

• Difficulty in submitting application
3/ Existing graduate students in the department

• Request them to review your application drafts.

• Ask them about what might increase the chances of your success

• The current and future research directions of the lab.

• Institutional and lab ethics

• Safety etc.
You never know how you might benefit from contacting more people than just the prof💁🏻‍♀️

Retweet the first tweet if you found it useful 💪🏼
▪️I received an offer of acceptance for a PhD program that was not fully funded.

▪️I was so confused - Accept or decline?

▪️Emailing existing graduate students came to my rescue.

Here’s how I did it!

My email and their response! 💪🏼
Example of how contacting the graduate school coordinator made my application journey smooth.

Has your graduate school application been rejected? 📄

There are two steps you can take after the rejection letter.

A short thread 🧵 on how to turn a rejection to your advantage

Amplify @Oludeewon @baba_Omoloro @AaronAkpuPhilip @OpenAcademics @PhDfriendSana @AcademicChatter
1/ Context: Although I was not rejected from this graduate program, I was offered an offer without guaranteed funding.

This meant that I was expected to look for funding on my own during my PhD or until my PI received a grant that he could use to pay me.
2/ Such an offer was obviously very stressful so I didn’t join this program.

Now, I had two options

• Forget about this application and apply for other schools.

• Utilize my relationship with the PI (who agreed to accept me in my cold-email) to understand…….

How to short list professors for your PhD/ Master’s?

A short thread 🧵

@baba_Omoloro @Oludeewon @Okafor_SC @PhDfriendSana @AcademicChatter @OpenAcademics @LokomoPeter kindly amplify💪🏼
1. There are two ways you can short list professors:

- According to the rank and prestige of the university

- According to overlapping interests.
2. I prefer the second way because when your interests naturally align with that of the prof, it:

- Makes your application (SoP/CV/LoR) more relevant to the program

- Increases your chances of admit

- Decreases chances that you’ll drop out due to misalignment in interests.

How to get SOLID letters of recommendation for graduate school applications - Part 2 📩

Look at this sample of a compelling LoR from MIT.

A thread🧵on how you can get a similar letter from your prof.
@baba_Omoloro @Oludeewon @Okafor_SC @OpenAcademics @PhDfriendSana @PhDVoice
Believe it or not, an LoR is a tricky document in the application process.

You don't really have control over what goes inside.

But there are ways you can apply to ensure that the letter does have impressive characteristics about you.

Let's dive in ~
⚪️ Assuming that you have a great equation with your recommender, request them to answer the following questions in the letter 👇👇👇

While NOT necessary, publications CAN greatly boost your profile for graduate school applications 📄💪🏼

This is a thread 🧵 on how to write a Review Paper.

Here’s my first-authored, published review paper👇

@baba_Omoloro @olumuyiwaayo @PhDfriendSana @hapyresearchers @PhDVoice
1/ What is a Review Paper?

• Summarises the state of knowledge on a given subject.

- E.g., Talk about the ways in which a particular technology (aptamers) has been used over the decades.

• Highlights gaps/weaknesses in the way the topic has been approached scientifically
- E.g., Despite their efficacy against viruses, aptamers have not been tested against SARS-CoV-2 (this is a hypothetical example).

• Discusses why it is significant to do better research on the topic/Answers why is this topic important?

• Recommends way to improve…..
