As Israel seems to have beaten its fourth Covid wave – this one a Delta variant wave – some observations. 1/

arieh.substack.com/p/israels-delt…
At the beginning of the wave in July, it seemed like something was off. Despite Israel's very high vaccination rate, Delta was spreading widely among both unvaccinated and vaccinated people.

arieh.substack.com/p/inside-israe…
I say "despite Israel's very high vaccination rate", but actually Israel's vaccination rate isn't so hot anymore when compared to many industrialised countries. 20% of the population is under 12, and vaccine resistance in the Arab population makes it hard to push beyond 70%.
But Israel vaccinated its population *early*, following Pfizer's protocol of 3 weeks between doses. That was good in February, but led to significantly reduced protectiveness from the vaccine now. 4/
At its peak effectiveness, the Pfizer vaccine is like 90-97% effective at preventing coronavirus *infection*. But in June/July, Israel saw barely any difference in infection rates between vaccinated and unvaccinated people in PCR testing. 5/
So Israel made what was then a controversial choice: booster doses. Starting with over-60s but quickly offered to anyone who was vaccinated more than 5 months ago. Takeup has been slow in younger agegroups, but 3.75M booster doses have been administered. 6/
Israel also re-introduced the Green Pass vaccine certificate, and announced that from October it would only be valid if your most recent vaccine dose was within in the last 6 months. 7/
And it worked. Big time. In July, most daily coronavirus cases were vaccinated. Today 69% are unvaccinated.

Only 6% of daily cases have had a vaccine dose (booster or second dose) in the last 6 months, despite this group being like 50%+ of the population.
Hospitals emptied of vaccinated people after boosters began. But the number of unvaccinated continued to rise throughout September, until the wave broke as boosters cut transmission chains and restored some level of population immunity.

(read the article re: the yellow line!)
Israel's Delta wave is collapsing quickly now, with daily cases back below the USA and UK.

I'd be interested in comparisons to the UK, where the picture is so different: very high daily infections but relatively low hospitalisations and deaths. In July, the UK looked like a model for Israel but the reality was quite different as hospitals filled up and deaths mounted.

I will always associate these little crowns with a genuine epiphany about how the world was changing. It was 2003. I was sitting in the Quadrant pub in Bristol, drinking with my university flatmates @BritishTim @SmallAperture. 1/

I noticed the little crowns and numbers on the glasses. Mostly the number, like in this photo, was 2043 though some were 303s. I asked my friends what it meant. None of us knew. 2/
In my semi-drunken state I had an idea. I pulled out my Nokia 6210 and opened the WAP browser to Google's WAP portal, which could translate web pages into a format that could be viewed on a phone. I googled it. 3/

So I'm probably going to regret asking this, but why are several QAnon accounts claiming today is Christmas?
OK. Seems like they've decided 9/11 is the REAL birthday of Jesus. ImageImageImage
Looks like this one has been around for a while, linking this purported date for the birth of Jesus with the 9/11 attacks. See eg this article from 2007. stltoday.com/suburban-journ… Image

This is right, though of course the 'horse dewormer" stuff came about because people without prescriptions were buying and taking literal horse dewormer, not prepared for humans or at human-safe dosages.
As with HCQ, Ivermectin is a perfectly good medicine for the conditions it's supposed to be used for. It's just neither is supposed to be used for Covid-19.
Around quarter of a BILLION people take Ivermectin every year to combat parasites. The inventor won a Nobel prize. We don't want a situation where humans refuse a good parasite treatment because "yuk, it's horse medicine".

My friends only eat Kosher meat. @TheFourteas in Stratford-upon-Avon demanded to serve them a chicken sandwich and refused to replace it with an alternative or even just remove it. Eventually, my friends and their 2yo kid were thrown out. tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReview…

Update: @TheFourteas has responded, basically mocking my Jewish friends for not eating non-Kosher meat as "seeking refuge behind imaginative cultural or religious reasons".

All they wanted was to swap a chicken sandwich for cucumber, or to just leave it off the plate altogether Image

Initial data from Israel: 10 days after the Pfizer booster, people's chance of of catching the virus was reduced by 4.6 times (4, 5.3) according to a Risk Day method of calculation, and 4.2x (4, 4.7) according to a matched demographic model. That's compared to 2-dosed people. ImageImage
These people are mostly over-60s, and the vast majority of them were vaccinated before 1 February. The booster is supposed to restore the vaccine's waning protection and it seems to be doing a decent job.
Protection against severe illness seems even stronger — 5-8 times the protection of two -dosed people depending on which model is used. And bear in mind, 2-dosed people are still significantly more protected against severe Covid-19 than the unvaccinated. Image

In a clip I saw, Roseberry was addressing "Joe" (presumably Joe Biden). He claimed there were four other bombs being held by "patriots" that would be launched if he is killed, and one of them might be at Joe's "back door". Not sure how credible these claims are, of course.
In his livestream, Roseberry said " I'm looking for all my other patriots to come out and join me", saying his bomb is "the foundation" that could take out "two and a half blocks".
But Roseberry's grievances are also more personal; he said that his healthcare didn't pain-relieving shots for his back, and it was unfair that top athletes could get this treatment. He seems to blame Joe Biden for this.
