1/ Here’s a thread linking tweets and articles with some useful info related to the referendum question about equalization, on the ballot for Alberta’s municipal elections October 18, 2021.
Tweet 2/ of this thread, is the text of the question
2/ Should section 36(2) of the Constitution Act, 1982, Parliament and the government of Canada’s commitment to the principle of making equalization payments, be removed from the Constitution?
Your answer choices: yes or no calgary.ca/election/infor…
3/ Adding this relevant & informative thread by U of Alberta political scientist @DrJaredWesley, is quote-tweeted by @trevortombe, including his (U of C Prof Tombe’s) added commentary
5/ “Equalization is a symbol of what it means to be Canadian and a pillar of our social and economic bargain that allows Alberta to run more of its own affairs.
6/ (quote from 5/ cont’d) “Threatening to remove it from the constitution will not only undermine this bargain. It will also bolster the cause of separatists here at home.”
7/ (abbrev) “[W]ould require Ottawa and all provinces to sit down and negotiate to amend the constitution, something that just isn’t going to happen no matter how strong the referendum result turns out to be.”
17/ adding this relevant observation by @paulisci, to my collection of tweets/threads about the equalization question that will be on the ballot in Alberta's general election Oct. 18
21/ "In defence of equalization
Stephen Maher: It is a dangerous mistake to view Canada as a piggybank into which some provinces make payments and others withdrawals"
from the #AtIssue clip ref'd in tweet 23/:
Andrew Coyne: "Mostly a stunt […] If there’s anything that Albertans dislike more than equalization it's Jason Kenney" (Mr. Coyne notes this as a reasons some might vote no for equalization = to show displeasure with the premier)
...
also from the #AtIssue clip ref'd in tweet 23/:
Chantal Hébert: "Conceived at a time when Kenney was influential [no longer the case] […] The question is [asking Albertans if they want to] walk away from equalization."
...
another quote from the #AtIssue clip referenced in tweet 23/:
Althia Raj: "Kenney has been campaigning against Trudeau for the past decade." (this was in response to whether Kenney would drop complaining about equalization if majority of Albertans voted no)
26/ I'm going to unroll this (hopefully will work), so that there's a pdf online you can share with other Albertans you know, who don't use Twitter: @threadreaderapp please unroll - thanks

Kristin, you're being shown a clip out of context. If you'd watched QP today, you'd know that he was responding to CPC member's claims that Cdns would save $500 to $800 if the carbon tax was removed. To save that you'd need to drive 37,000 klms. You'd need to drive non-stop 24-7.
@TheJasonPugh 3/
I really think people like Kirstin mean well and I blame those who are lying to her or manipulating her with clips shared out of context.
Rage-farming with disinformation and use of hyperbolic rhetoric and tug-at-your-heartstrings anecdotes. I'm waiting for Poilievre to accuse the (fed Liberal) govt of k*lling puppies next (has come close to doing that today in #QP).
"The federal Conservatives say they won't be taking advice from "so-called experts" when it comes to carbon pricing, after more than 200 economists signed an open letter challenging Pierre Poilievre's stance."
2/ My thoughts, this is like when Harper showed a disdain for experts. Sounds like if CPC formed next govt, data will be destroyed, scientific and economic programs under-funded, decisions made at the top without consultation with experts. Is this what Millennials wish? Really?
3/ For anyone who wasn't paying attn to #CdnPoli (or was not voting age then) during Harper years, here's a good article by Carol Linnitt, in May 2013 issue of Academic Matters, "Harper’s attack on science: No science, no evidence, no truth, no democracy" academicmatters.ca/harpers-attack…
Let's face it. There are voters out there who are selfish. They'd rather save a few cents on a litre of gas*, than support the current govt who are implementing the most effective policies for reducing carbon emissions. They don't care about climate crisis. *(8/10 get a rebate)
I agree that politics has changed since time when Brian Mulroney PM, & there's more polarization & probs now - tracing back to Newt Gingrich in 90's, amplified & facilitated more recently by social media. However ...
2/ However, to simply say it's worse now, implies a 'both sides' that I think ignores the difference in how the Liberal and Conservative leaders act and speak. PMJT does NOT push conspiracies to hurt PP, but PP does - to hurt PMJT.
3/ So much is being said right now, about how better things were during Mulroney's time - where parties may have butted heads but also were willing to speak with each other and were (for the most part) respectful.
Here's the @TorontoStar article by @StephanieLevitz, about the topic they're discussing on @PnPCBC right now thestar.com/politics/feder…
2/ (Abbrev) "At Feb 25 townhall in Etobicoke, MPs — James Bezan, Tom Kmiec & Shuvaloy Majumdar — were confronted by criticism Poilievre missing in action on Ukraine file & when he does show up, he only delivers partisan talking points."
(I recommend subscribing to @TorontoStar)
3/ "You're alienating the Ukrainian support, absolutely, no doubt about it," said one man, who described himself as "definitely conservative."
"And I know that today you are explaining, and as you know, when you're explaining, you're not winning."
