Here’s a (short) thread linking tweets and articles with some useful info related to the Calgary municipal election, Oct 18, 2021 – specifically re mayoral candidates:
2/
I'm listening to a presser on @CBCNews right now. Chyron: "Members of big city mayors' caucus speak before meeting PM Trudeau today in Ottawa."
This reminds me of how important it is that we vote for our choice of mayor, as they advocate for Calgary to the feds.

- really don't think I should have to get a booster, simply bec I mixed my doses: AZ & Pfizer, holding off for now. Many of us received the AZ, in a way to protect our communities, & cannot see anything wrong w mixed dosing. Why is the US unsure about this?
ref (abbrev) "The U.S. is also awaiting guidance from the CDC about travellers who received mixed doses of COVID-19 vaccines or the AZ vaccine. The U.S. has not approved the mixing of vaccine doses or the AstraZeneca vaccine for its own residents." cbc.ca/news/canada/us…
3/
that said (see my top tweet), we have no plans to travel to the US anytime soon. They are struggling more with containing Covid-19 - less vaccinated, higher case counts, especially the states we would be driving through to get elsewhere: Montana and/or Idaho

Journalists need more than empty statements from their media companies thestar.com/opinion/contri… via @TorontoStar
2/
As I always note, important to read the entire piece, but here are some quotes: "Earlier this week, Canadian media companies signed a statement outlining their support for journalists on the receiving end of abuse. ...
3/
... Presumably, the need to put out this statement was fuelled in part by People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier calling on his supporters to “play dirty” with journalists, though neither Bernier nor his party are explicitly mentioned." thestar.com/opinion/contri…

the fed NDP leader was just asked if he'll vote with the Liberals in order to get legislation passed, even if it isn't perfect according to the NDP's wishes (paraphrased).
Singh: "We've withheld our votes in the past, we'll do it again."

(listening to presser on @CBCNews)
2/
NOW he's admitting to what I saw when following QP and the (slow as molasses) movement of bills through the Canada's Parliament.

During #elxn44 he kept saying that it was wrong of Trudeau to call an elxn, because they supported their bills and there was no need
3/
Mr. Singh also made a big deal about this morning's news story, heavily implying it occurred much later than during transition

- see linked thread with important clarifications by @MarkBourrie & others on the thread

Again with the "some people wanted hard sustained lockdowns."

We have as yet had a "hard lockdown" and have not asked for that.
2/
Also, he's blaming our higher unvaccinated rate. That rate wasn't any better when they opened the province up for Stampede. It's not like we had enough vaccinated in July, but then a bunch of unvaccinated people moved here 🙄
3/
also says higher unvaccinated rate "despite our best efforts."

Not true, IMHO. There were provinces that much earlier than now, implemented real vaccine passports - and not the half-measures one we have, where you get out of being vaccinated by choosing being tested instead

I try really hard to be fair, when reading tweets by journalists. Their jobs have to be more complicated & difficult than I can imagine, & I have my own biases. That said, it sure appears as tho Mr. Akin has a very narrow view of anything associated with PM Trudeau. Sad, really
2/
Here's part of what PMJT said, & the important context that Mr. Akin leaves out of his tweet:
"These two men have gone thru an unbelievably difficult ordeal. For the past thousand days they have shown strength, perseverance, resilience & grace, & we are all inspired by that."

source for my quote, and I assume the source for Mr. Akin's comment (which I quote-tweet at the top of this thread)

(they did hold cmte mtgs, do studies, but no consensus among diff parties)
3/
(from article Mr. Coyne is reacting to) "Trudeau said, however, that he would not favour proportional representation as an alternative, saying the system "gives more weight to smaller parties that are perhaps fringe parties."

(In other words, more legislative pwr to PPC)

- when did Trudeau say he was against taxing billionaires? Mr. Singh just said both Mr. Trudeau & Mr. O'Toole are against taxing the billionaires. This presser is nuts. Too many disingenuous statements. Discouraging that there are voters that believe him.

Heather McPherson just said Jason Kenney has not handled the pandemic well, but also Trudeau sat on the stage and said "yeah, you're right, it's the best summer ever"

listening to Erin O'Toole's presser (played on delay by @CBCNews, since there had been overlap between the leader's speeches)

His answer to reporter's questions regarding what Premier Kenney could've done differently, and O'Toole is using the false dichotomy of health v econ
2/
I guess that answers the question of what he would have done, if he'd been PM this past 18 months. We'd have been in much worse shape. It's this flawed thinking that has resulted in the crisis here in Alberta (IMHO)

slightly nasty tinge (IMHO) to this speech by the CPC leader right now

(listening on @CBCNews)

wouldn't recommend tuning in. It's a combination of misleading statements, accusations of being divisive - while being extremely divisive with the content of this speech, and so on
2/
Mr. O'Toole just asked about tone of his speech. Reporter pointed out "you started this campaign by claiming you were more positive, but you were anything but, in this speech. You made personal attacks on Mr. Trudeau."

O'Toole doesn't answer, asks Cdns to compare platforms

now another reporter is asking if Mr. O'Toole is concerned his victory is slipping away, based upon the tone of his speech today (paraphrased)
