READ: The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (@nujp) slams Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque for “denying censorship of the Philippine press.” #DefendPressFreedom
@nujp This comes after Malacañang congratulated Rappler CEO @mariaressa on receiving the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, but denied the attacks on Philippine media that had been the premise of Ressa's fight for press freedom.
@nujp Ressa and Rappler currently face a number of active cases. Rappler reporters are still barred from going to Malacañang, or anywhere near Duterte.
@nujp The House of Representatives under President Rodrigo Duterte also closed down media giant ABS-CBN during the pandemic, affecting thousands of the network’s workers as well as Filipinos in need of news and information.
@nujp Manila Today editor Lady Ann Salem was arrested on International Human Rights Day in 2020, for allegedly keeping firearms and explosives – the common charge against activists in a country where being a communist is not a crime.
@nujp Duterte was also included in Reporters Without Borders’ (RSF) list of “press freedom predators” in 2021. RSF said Duterte had been a “predator since taking office” and that his “predatory method” is total war against independent media.

.@IanEsguerra: Given a choice between Pia Ranada and Toni Gonzaga whose questions won't be offensive, the [politician] would go to the celebrity. The challenge for journalists is not to surrender this responsibility. We have to get these people answer our questions. | @newsdwight
@IanEsguerra@newsdwight .@camillediola: What if we welcome some of these influencers as part of our community? They may not be professional journalists, but if we count them as part of the news media, or try to seek accountability from them, we could also work with them about journalistic principles.
@IanEsguerra@newsdwight@camillediola .@mikenavallo: Social media influencers are not governed by rules. It will be hard for Comelec to monitor how much is being spent online. How many influencers can sway voters to pick a particular candidate just because they were paid? How do you seek accountability? | @newsdwight
