"Today's the day," Rey vowed standing at the threshold of the Underworld.

Blades of grass wrapped around her toes, as if pleading with her to stay in the world of the living a little while longer.

But she had a purpose, a plan that sent a shock of giddiness up her spine.

Stepping beyond the archway, a clammy embrace curled over her shoulders.

A world shrouded in decay.

Yet in the gift in her hands radiated warmth and life like a beacon.

It gave her strength to put one foot in front of the other towards the shores of the Styx.

As the Goddess of the Harvest, Rey understood the forces life and death were cyclical.

Springs, summers, falls, and winters all flowing one after the other.

A man passing on to embrace his lover in death was just as awe-inspiring as a bud being called back to the earth.

Rey knew Death was a stunning and beautiful force, so when his boat reached the shore, she offered him a smile.

And he dared to smile back.

It was a subtle quirk of his lips, his gaze roving over her body, eyes catching on the orb outstretched to him.

"Hello, Ben."
5/15

"What's all this?"

"I-I wanted to stop by." Even in the gray, muted light of his world, Rey's cheeks were illuminated with a blush.

Vitality.

"I don't get many visitors."

Her flush deepened.

"See, I saw this during the harvest, and thought of you."

"Me? Why?"
6/15

"When I spotted it, I was taken aback. So vibrant with hope, strength, and nourishment."

"And Death deserves such a gift?"

"Of course! You bear the heaviest burden of the gods by ferrying souls to the afterlife down here. You are most deserving to taste life's bounty."
7/15

Rey had no fear in forcing him to take the apple, her warm fingers a soothing balm to his icy flesh.

But she never shied away, not like the others.

When the fruit's crimson flesh refused to disintegrate at his touch, Ben was speechless.

"I knew this one was for you."
8/15

Rey's shimmering smile and residual warmth were imprinted on his memory for weeks.

The apple showed no signs of aging or wilting.

It was a trophy begging for delicious ruin.

The day Ben's resolve shattered, and his teeth sank into the fruit, it was rapture.
9/15

He savored every bite, greedily sucking his own fingers like a savage clamoring for the last drop of rich juices while dreaming of Rey and her smiles.

He needed more, but here was no telling if she would return to Death's door.

Core in hand, he strolled to his courtyard.
10/15

And Ben did what Death did best.

He dug a grave and ushered his dreams to the aether.

There he buried his hopes of soft smiles, desires of tender touches, and fantasies of a sun-kissed, freckled woman in his arms.

The brief taste of a life he would forever mourn.
11/15

The next time Rey mustered up the courage to return to Ben's world, she carried a peach, golden and tingling her palms.

"Rey!" She shivered at the way he called her name across the river.

Like she belonged to him.

And him to her.

It was sweeter than any fruit.
12/15

In all her eons, it was the most animated she'd ever seen Ben.

"You have to come with me, you have to see!"

He was halfway down the river when Rey's mind caught up with the fact she was in Death's boat traveling across the Styx.

"Where are we going?"

"To my home."
13/15

Aside from the stark character change, Rey noticed something different about Ben as he took her hand and guided her along the corridors of his palace.

He was warm.

She sensed it blooming from his heart like spreading roots, vibrance spilling from his very being.
14/15

As they rounded a corner, Rey's' gasp echoed along the courtyard.

There was no doubt as to what she was seeing.

A sprout emerged from the eroded mound of soil, standing proud and strong,

The first thing to ever grow in the Underworld.

"How?"

"Your gift."
15/15

"I don't know much about growing things," Ben shrugged. "But if you can spare the time?"

He moved to release her hand, bracing himself for rejection, but Rey simply laced their fingers tighter together.

A vow.

"I have all the time in the world, Ben."
