Hundreds of Indigenous demonstrators and allies gathered outside the White House on October 11 for a protest coinciding with Indigenous Peoples Day.
The purpose of the protest was to urge the Biden administration to take more aggressive action against the climate crisis—including stopping the Line 3 pipeline, among other fossil fuel projects.
Calling on Biden to stop Line 3 is one of the signature demands of the Indigenous Environmental Network, a coalition of several Indigenous tribal orgs, rights groups, labor orgs, and other allied entities.
According to several reports, the protests remained largely peaceful, though multiple demonstrators were arrested.

The Alisal Fire, which started Monday, October 11, 2021, swiftly grew to engulf 14,500 acres in California's Santa Barbara County by Wednesday.
It has forced closures on Highway 101 and evacuations of several communities and ranches. Dry underbrush and heavy winds propelled the blaze, which was only 5% contained by Wednesday morning, according to the Santa Barbara Office of Emergency Management.
Human-caused climate change has fueled drier conditions and hotter temperatures, making wildfire seasons worse internationally and especially in the Western U.S.

75% of COVID-19 vaccine doses worldwide have been claimed by 10 countries — here’s how an international agreement established decades ago is hindering vaccine equity today
Decades ago, the TRIPS Agreement was established under the World Trade Organization. The agreement focuses on the trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights.
‘The pharmaceutical industry says that vaccines are complicated, and therefore nobody can make them except us. But what we’re saying is, actually, their monopolies [on vaccine production] are complicated,’ said activist Achal Prabhala.

For the first time ever, a remote-controlled ocean drone sailed into the eye of a category 4 hurricane to help researchers understand one of the most extreme weather conditions on Earth.
The 'saildrone' was navigated through 50-ft waves and more than 120-mph winds within Hurricane Sam (which never made landfall), on September 30, 2021. Scientists hope to use the data and video footage to learn more about what drives and intensifies hurricanes.
With more information, predictions can become more accurate, and hopefully save lives and coastal communities from hurricanes in the future.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed an executive order on Monday that bars COVID-19 vaccine mandates—including ones from private employers or orgs.
The order states: 'No entity in Texas can compel receipt of a COVID-19 vaccine by any individual, including an employee or a consumer, who objects to such vaccination...'
'...for any reason of personal conscience, based on a religious belief, or for medical reasons, including prior recovery from COVID-19.'
