For months, we have been ringing the alarm about the unequivocal harm that filing, hearing, and debating anti-trans bills has had on our community and could have on our community.
What we worried most about is happening now — the relentless bullying we have witnessed in committee hearings and press conferences at the Capitol has trickled down to our schools and our communities.
These debates about what spaces transgender kids deserve access to is a debate about their humanity. They have sparked a staggering increase in anti-LGBTQ+ bullying incidents across Texas — both in number and severity.
It's become commonplace for us to receive calls from parents, students, schoolteachers about bullying, harassment, and abuse directed at LGBTQ+ children.
Here are just a few examples of what’s become our daily reality:
September: a trans middle schooler attempted to take her own life after being bullied by a classmate about her gender identity.

September: a Lamar Country student was brutally attacked at a homecoming game for being gay. According to his mother, a cisgender girl harassed him for being LGBTQ and "wanting to be a girl". He suffered a concussion.
October: a trans high schooler was denied access to bathroom facilities that match her gender identity after parents of other students complained. One of the “options” given to her was a restroom located outside.
If HB 25 passes, these reports are only going to get worse.

Common sense policy doesn’t seek to harm Texans or ignore the negative implications or complete lack of evidence of bills being proposed. It doesn’t rely on one or two anecdotes across an entire country of millions of kids.
