Is the person who vets Ted Sarandos' public-facing statements out sick this week?
If you're the head of a company that produces content and you have happily accepted the adulation of an industry when your content has been deemed to help educate and advance progressive conversations, you CANNOT turn around and pretend your bad content has no impact.
I happen NOT to believe that violent movies and video games cause violence, but I know a Mulaney Netflix special caused jokes about horses in hospitals to become a part of the conversation. Now imagine instead of "horses in hospitals" the joke left people feeling dehumanized.
Comedy influences and shapes culture and that has consequences and if you're going to pretend it DOESN'T, that it's just a version of on-stage skeet shooting, something funny people do exclusively to test boundaries, you shouldn't be lecturing people on comedy OR programming it.
There are some mighty big people who have contracts with Netflix ENTIRELY because they believe that Netflix is an industry thought-leader. I hope some of them are about to go off on Ted Sarandos, because he deserves the f*** out of it.
The Ted Sarandos crap just DRAINS me, because I believe that this shit — the stuff I write about, not the stuff I write — matters and matters in a REAL AND TANGIBLE WAY. And for a man with control over billions in content to not believe that? It's just… disheartening.
