In October 1924, The Daily Mail published a letter purporting to be from Soviet communist leader Grigori Zinoviev. It’s contents were chilling.

Marked “Very Secret”, it spoke of a “successful rising in the working class districts of England,” and, “it would be desirable to have cells in all the units of troops, and among factories working on munitions .” The story was headlined: Civil War Plot by Socialists’ Masters. 2/x

It was the heat of the UK election season, and Winston Churchill & other conservatives used the letter to put pressure on the incumbent Labour Party, accusing them of sympathy and ties w/a hostile power.

There was only one problem: The letter was a complete fake. 3/x

It wasn’t built to last, and was soon exposed as “a crude fabrication.” After all, it had originated w/a Churchill ally in Secret Intelligence - who was the son of The Daily Mail publisher. It also contained suspiciously Churchillian phrasing (“pronounced its weighty word”). 4/x

But Churchill & the Tories were relentless: “You all know the story of Kerensky, how stood there (like Labour PM MacDonald), pretending he meant to do the best for his country, but apologizing behind the scenes to the dark, deadly forces which had him in their grip.” 5/x

Labour cried foul, but the damage was done and the Tories swept into power. Churchill never let off the gas: Conspirators “of every race under the sun” were at war with civilization, so there was nothing unexpected about “the letter from Zinoviev - alias Applebaum!” 6/x
