1/ What's it like to be a public health worker?
nytimes.com/2021/10/18/us/…

"keeps a vigilant eye on her rearview mirror...She must make sure nobody finds out where she lives."

"to many in the community, the enemy was not the virus. It was her."
2/ "should be attacked 'on sight,' one resident wrote online. Someone else suggested bringing back public hangings. 'Dr. -, we are coming for you,' a man warned at a public meeting"
3/ "An angry crowd swarmed into the courthouse during a briefing on the Covid-19 response one day, looking for her, and protesters also showed up at her house"

"you’re afraid you’re going to get fired, or you’re afraid you’re going to get killed. Or both."
4/ "The public grew so hostile toward her that she at one point had her elementary-age children sit away from the windows when they did their homework."

“I think a lot of them are still trying to figure out how hard they got spanked.”
5/ "'you’ve got some nuts facing off against this whole goddamn town,' a man said in an eerily sing-song voice. 'You’re going to pay for this.'"

"he had wanted Dr. - 'to feel the way the rest of us feel,' which was 'helpless and insecure.'"
6/ "a health officer resigned after a resident announced her home address at one meeting. In NV, a woman warned ominously that those protesting health orders made the meals, changed the tires & filled the prescriptions of local officials. 'We’re everywhere,' she said."
7/ "'I’m not the one who should be scared.' In Michigan, a man shouted another warning: 'There’s a lot of good guys out there ready to do bad things!'"

(interesting who's entitled to be scared or not & who's a good guy or not)
8/ "Several health officials said they had installed security cameras, were getting police patrols at their houses or were now carrying pepper spray."

"the public sometimes threatening or verbally abusing tracers"
9/ “Everybody looks at public health now and says, ‘Who wants to work there?’ she said. 'Who wants to work in that chaotic mess?'"

Public health has been underfunded for decades and is not under attack.

We're VASTLY LESS PREPARED for the next pandemic.

1/ High-profile and fully vaccinated but immunocompromised:

Colin Powell’s death wrongly seized upon to undermine utility of coronavirus vaccines

washingtonpost.com/politics/powel…

Powell was 84 and had multiple myeloma, prostate cancer, and Parkinson's disease. Image
2/ 45% of people with active multiple myeloma developed an adequate response to the Pfizer or Moderna COVID vaccines in this study:
nature.com/articles/s4137…

That means that more than half of people with multiple myeloma who were vaccinated did not respond to vaccination. Image
3/ To protect people who are too young to be vaccinated, elderly & immunocompromised, it is essential that everyone around them ALSO be vaccinated & take reasonable precautions (masking, testing, etc).

People in civilized societies look out for one another.

1/ The only vaccine for which we give a single dose is the yellow fever vaccine.

We give 2, 3, or 4 doses of all other vaccines.

2/ It was a noble effort to try to develop a 1-dose COVID vaccine.

Simpler logistics.

More equitable:
Only have to address barriers (e.g. time off work, childcare, transportation) x1 instead of x2.

3/ If you got a single dose of J&J vaccine, what should you get for a second dose?

3/ With all three vaccines, functional antibody responses (antibody-dependent cellular phagocytosis & antibody-dependent complement deposition) were stable over time:
