I’ve decided to read X-Men from the beginning and I will document this completely original idea in this thread.
I find it interesting that this is the second panel of X-Men #1 and nearly sixty years later this is still pretty much how we convey telepathic speech bubbles vs regular ones.

I have no doubt that Stryker’s rally being at Madison Square Garden is a reference to the Nazi rally hosted by the German American Bund at MSG in 1939, attended by over 20,000 Americans.

I don’t think it’s what they’re doing here but Dazzler and Colossus should have a team-up move where she blasts him with light and he reflects it at people in a wide arc like a disco ball.
Rogue’s story in Genosha is really quite gripping. I can’t really comment on whether or not aspects of it are handled as well or as sensitively as possible, but from a narrative perspective it’s the most invested in the character I’ve been since she joined the team.
They talk about it in the Angel episode of @CerebroCast but I didn’t realise that Cameron Hodge’s love for Angel was as overtly notable on the page as it is. It’s not just simple jealousy, it’s romantic love and infatuation twisted into hatred.
Magneto spends so long (YEARS!) out of the helmet, that when he puts it back on it feels like a big fucking deal.

I don’t know if anyone can supplant Legion as my favourite mutant, but Colossus is DEFINITELY the character I’ve grown to appreciate more during this project and he’s absolutely one of my favourites now.

I’ve never liked Jean Grey much but this scene put some stuff in perspective and I have a handle on her now. The way her parents approach her treatment as a teenager really reads like a well intentioned couple trying to figure out the best way to help their neurodivergent child.
(I say this as someone who was diagnosed with autism as an adult, which ended up being a very liberating discovery for me. I don’t know if I’d go to far as to say “Jean Grey *is* neurodivergent but I think it’s an interesting lens to interpret the character.)
(There’s also a lot of research and anecdotal stories about how teen girls specifically are diagnosed at a much lower rate and are forced to learn to mask from a very young age. I think a lot of that could apply to Jean throughout pivotal moments in her life.)
(Part of the reason I wouldn’t want to go so far as to say Jean does have autism or is neurodivergent is the same reason that I don’t like Legion being autistic in those early New Mutants stories. These are fictional fantasy characters with magic brains, at the end of the day.)

Piotr died in January 2001 and came back in July 2004. In universe, he was only dead for like six months at most.

I never really rated Messiah Complex as highly as other people do, but it’s an event that really stands atop decades of history. Caliban’s death meant nothing to me in 2008, but now I understand his sacrifice and it’s importance to Warpath specifically.
it’s a small touch but I love that none of the dialogue Brubaker gives to Bishop is a lie. He’s leaving out “I tried to kill the baby” but he isn’t lying about what happened, so it won’t ping as suspicious to Emma.
Messiah Complex doesn’t quite reach the status of “you can read the individual issues as part of their own series without the crossover” but I do appreciate that each issue feels like an issue of its own series.

Second Coming isn’t one of the best crossovers but the way the X-line builds to it over the course of two years is impressive. It feels very natural and the way Bastion is pulling everyone’s strings in the lead-up actually reminds me of the year or so before The Muir Island Saga.
I want to see a story where Julian gets resurrected and comes back with his hands, then has a conversation with Xi’an about it. I understand why she chose to return to life with her prosthetic but I feel like Hellion wouldn’t and it would be interesting to see that on the page.

overall I think the reason for the schism is a bit contrived, but this moment is written and drawn perfectly. The wild urgency from Logan vs the calm pragmatism from Scott shines through in this scene.

I didn’t realise that Akihiro is a recovering addict but this is a major part of his solo book. The sequences where he’s on drugs, drawn by Riley Rossmo, are as beautiful as they are unsettling.
Piotr has been a real standout character for me throughout this entire project and Kitty absolutely reads him for filth here. The surgical precision of her words sum up Colossus whole deal so succinctly and that’s why it cuts so deep.

I loved this era when there was a bunch of different super schools in the Marvel Universe. Not just the Jean Grey School but Avengers Academy, Future Foundation, Braddock Academy and the schools in Latveria, Wakanda and India.

this is a period of X-Men where Logan very clearly is in a long-term, monogamous relationship with someone who is a supporting character across several titles but OH NO here comes Hell World Jean Grey and he’s forgotten all about Melita.
another example of Sinister making enemies of unfathomably powerful alien races in the Gillen run that just might come back to bite him (and everyone) in the Krakoa era.
this is a fantastic one-and-done story that I think people will get a lot out of revisiting with the perspective of Powers of X.

The Skinless Man is a great lesson in character design. You start with the obvious (man without skin) and then you add a character specific detail (dresses like a barrister) that makes him unforgettable.
I like that they Mike McKone for what is ostensibly the back door pilot for a new Exiles book, even if it did end not being called that.
