NEW LAWSUIT: We’re suing Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos for failing to release records related to the Assembly’s baseless efforts to investigate the 2020 general election.
americanoversight.org/american-overs…
Speaker Vos has done everything in his power to protect this investigation from scrutiny. Finger-pointing, name-calling, and cavorting with conspiracy theorists are all perfectly legal — but ignoring the open records statute is not.
americanoversight.org/document/compl…
Vos has engaged in a months-long pattern of delay, failure to engage with our inquiries, and narrow disclosure of irrelevant documents to avoid compliance with the law.

It’s time for Speaker Vos to follow the law and make these documents available to the public.
This is our second lawsuit related to the election review in the last week. Our first, filed on October 8 against Vos and the State Assembly, seeks documents held by the contractors hired to complete the investigation. Today’s lawsuit identifies Speaker Vos as the sole defendant.

Election officials across the country have been receiving threats since the 2020 presidential election. Some officials have faced regular emails and phone calls harassing and threatening them with violence.

In June, the FBI launched a task force to address the issue. We FOIA’d DOJ for records related to this task force that could shed light on these threats.

Specifically, we requested records “sufficient to identify the number and types of threats to election officials currently being investigated by or previously investigated by the FBI.”

This #FOIAFriday, we’re talking about taxpayer spending at properties owned by former president Donald Trump. Here’s some highlights of what we’ve uncovered using FOIA and state open records laws so far.
Last December, @MartynMcL of the @TheScotsman reported on records we obtained regarding 4 trips made by Eric Trump. Turnberry — a Trump resort in Scotland — charged U.S. taxpayers $32,742 for the accompanying Secret Service members’ hotel costs.
We uncovered that billionaire and former U.S. Ambassador to the U.K. Woody Johnson paid £1,143 (about $1,500) for a single day of activities at Trump’s golf course in Scotland in July 2018.

Last week, Arizona Senate “audit” liaison Ken Bennett testified before the House Oversight Committee. Now he’s headlining “audit” town halls with a group that organized rallies to support Jan. 6 insurrectionists. Here’s what we’ve uncovered about Bennett.
azmirror.com/blog/bennett-h…
In his testimony, Bennett told Congress he "never witnessed any evidence" the audit was looking for bamboo fibers in ballots. Except we've got his text messages — in which “audit” officials discuss the hunt for "bamboo threads."
We also uncovered records that show Bennett sent a letter with misleading information about the election and “audit” to individuals who were working to undermine faith in the 2020 election.

BREAKING: The Superior Court of Maricopa County rejected the Arizona Senate’s blanket claim that legislative privilege allows it to withhold most substantive records relating to the partisan “audit” of Maricopa County ballots. This is a big win for transparency.
The judge ruled that the public interest in shining light on the “audit” eclipses the Arizona Senate’s insistence on secrecy, writing: “[American Oversight]’s interest, on behalf of the public at large, significantly outweighs the Senate Defendants’ interest in non-disclosure.”
"The audit challenges whether there was an election free of fraud, corruption or incompetence,” the court wrote. “The stakes could not be higher and transparency ... substantially outweighs any concern regarding chilling future legislative deliberations.”

NEW LAWSUIT: We sued the Department of Justice to compel the release of records related to former President Trump’s post-election efforts to pressure top department officials to back his baseless voter-fraud claims.
americanoversight.org/american-overs…
Among the records sought are notes from White House meetings during the presidential transition period, a time when Trump and his allies were engaged in a pressure campaign to get DOJ to aid efforts that Trump believed would reverse his election loss.
We are also seeking documents from Jeffrey Clark, the Justice Department official whom Trump wanted to install as acting attorney general in early January thanks to Clark’s support for Trump’s claims of election fraud.

On Friday, we sued to compel the release of records related to the Wisconsin Assembly’s partisan election investigation. Just hours later, a Wisconsin court ordered the Assembly to produce the records or to show cause for why the records aren’t released.

In May, Wisconsin’s top Republican lawmaker, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, announced a new investigation of Wisconsin’s general election results, joining a growing list of states pursuing “investigations” in an effort to perpetuate the Big Lie.
The investigation was initially going to be conducted by retired police officers and an attorney, former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman. It is now being run solely by Gableman.
