Tonight we have briefed all our CEO, COO & education executive members on the government's Net Zero Strategy

This is a landmark moment for the next generation, for our economy, and the public service leaders and organisations. Academy trusts have a big role to play

A thread⬇️
1. This really matters to young people. Nearly 60% of young people surveyed by Bath University felt very worried or extremely worried by climate change. They expect leadership from government, but - crucially - they expect leadership from the organisations they attend every day
2. Great trusts don't wait on a gov. Some are already setting zero carbon targets, others have strategies in place, some are investing in making their estates greener - & already generating returns. See @PalladianTrust @N_StarAT @northstartrust for eg's.

3. It's clear there's a real passion amongst many trusts to learn and seize the opportunities. Our CEO Strategy Group on sustainability led by @rachaelgacs has demonstrated we still have a lot to learn from other sectors - from public utilities to the NHS

4. This will define schools' work in many ways. On curriculum and careers...

Millions of jobs will be created, but they will need new skills. Today's report states that "20% of the workforce could see demand for their skills affected, either positively or negatively."
5. Local labour markets will experience huge change. The report states: "high-carbon sectors will have to adapt or decline, resulting in a need to transition local labour markets to ensure people have the right skills to make the most of these opportunities." Is this your area?
6. The report puts trusts & schools at the heart of this: "Schools & colleges will play a vital role delivering high-quality education and training to equip young people with the knowledge and skills required for the green economy." The #strategic are already doing this of course
7. Some trusts/schools are already investing in greener energy + more energy efficient buildings. Huge potential savings. £millions of pounds funding available & highlighted in our funding briefings. Both our next national CEO & COO network meetings will feature case study trusts
8. If you are a CEO, COO or education exe member of @ForumStrategyUK you will have received news of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Fund over the last year, amongst other funding. The government has today announced it is investing a further £1425 million over 2022/23 to 2024/25
9. Strategic orgs use self-generated accountability to drive change & commit to communities. Today's report states "Public sector organisations should be taking steps to achieve net zero now should report their progress so they can be held accountable." Young people expect this!
10. However, for those who aren't prioritising this already, take note. The government report today states that it will also "legislate to enable it to require the reporting of public sector emissions on a consistent and coherent basis if this is not done on a voluntary basis."
11. Today's report underlines the important role of trusts/schools in achieving a greener economy & combatting climate change. Young people & communities expect it. Work & learn with us @ForumStrategyUK as we continue to champion it via our strategy group: forumstrategy.org/ceo-strategy-g…
12. Finally, and as an independent organisation supporting academy trust leaders nationally, a sincere thank you to the government for leading on this internationally and setting out a clear plan. Leadership at all levels is now required. @BorisJohnson @nadhimzahawi @dianabarran
