THREAD: Another death on Rikers. Violence. Self harm. Denied food. Medicine. Beds. Know this: This isn’t bc of a “shortage” of officers. This is bc police--enabled by media--lied about bail reform & alternatives to mass caging. Happening across the country.nytimes.com/2021/10/18/nyr…
The horrors you are seeing on Rikers are the result of a coordinated campaign of fearmongering. Copes weaponized a handful of tragedies printed by a complicit media, to convince the public that commonsense bail reform was dangerous when opposite was true.fwd.us/news/new-repor…
History: In April 2019, NY passed widely popular bail reform. No jail for most misdemeanors, non-violent felonies & a few “violent” offenses that included no physical harm. It worked. Thousands who otherwise would’ve been caged were w/ families. Kept jobs & housing.
The reforms came after years of organizing to end the practice of making freedom dependent on wealth, and to make real the supposed foundation of our legal system - the presumption of innocence. Also created a pathway for the elimination of Rikers Island. nytimes.com/2019/10/17/opi…
NY police & prosecutors couldn’t win on ideas, so resorted to cynical tactic of fear to defeat bail reform. Same strategy used through the 80s & 90s to create what's known today as mass incarceration to perpetuate it. Unfortunately, it worked.theappeal.org/protestors-alb…
In 2020, NY leaders caved to political pressure & expanded the numbers of those who could be caged pretrial. They did so during the height of the pandemic, in the middle of the night, just weeks after bail reform was enacted. And the NYC jail population swelled.
Rikers is a hellscape. Now ~6000 humans are caged there, & in a jail-boat in the Bronx. The steep increase bc of bail rollbacks, judges undermining key parts of the reforms, & ever-worsening court delays have all contributed. Rikers must close. But there’s more.
NYC prosecutors right now -- most if not all who consider themselves liberal & progressive & vote Democrat -- are asking judges to cage even more people there. Despite what they know. Last week, judges listened 260 times. Set unaffordable bail.
We must stand vigilant & not continue to be duped by lies & propaganda. This is not just a Rikers story. Or a NY one. It’s happening all across the country. Right now it's happening in Chicago. Cops are trying to roll back bail reform. teenvogue.com/story/rising-c…
In San Francisco, liberal billionaires & far right racists are funding & driving an effort of demonizing people living in poverty while making up statistics to recall a forward thinking prosecutor and former public defender named Chesa Boudin.
What you can do? A lot, but one really tangible thing is volunteer to COURTWATCH. Get trained on language of court & help collectively hold prosecutors to account. Google “CourtWatch” and your city. Some like CourtWatchpg.com are virtual. Join from anywhere.
To prevent more deaths on Rikers, @NYCMayor & other elected leaders need to stand up to those who seek to drag us backward & tell the public what is true - more jail makes us less safe. No one should die because they are too poor to buy their freedom.nytimes.com/2021/09/15/opi…

Thread. Speaking to reporters past few days. Baffled how head of NYPD could so brazenly lie. In this case about tie btwn "reform" & "crime" w/o data. Answer: bc he can & media still buys it. Even now, reporters asking *me* for data to disprove *him.* Fine:newyork.cbslocal.com/2021/10/14/bai…
A NY Post analysis *of NYPD data* found that while there were 528 shootings through June 30, 2020, only one person released due to bail reform was charged with a shooting. NY Post found NYPD Chief had been lying for over a year. He kept lying. nypost.com/2020/07/08/nyp…
Since NY bail reform went into effect, there has not been a single month when more than 0.8% of released people were re-arrested for a violent felony. This number has not changed since before bail reform. courtinnovation.org/sites/default/…
More copaganda & pro-carceral reporting from @nytimes. Buying police, corporate, far right, & brainwashed “Chesa Boudin recall” liberals talking points that Walgreens closures are signal of failures of reform. W/o asking basic questions or talking to experts. Thread w/ facts:
Walgreens is not just closing in San Francisco. Walgreens will close another 150 stores & increase annual savings target to $3.3 billion. This appears to be a public relations ploy to cover up for massive layoffs.
Remarkable. After years of @CBSNewYork parroting police lies about bail reform, they report, in detail, on how the NYPD Chief lied to them & the public. “Tough questions about cop’s penchant for blaming bail reform.” Will they stop sourcing cops now? newyork.cbslocal.com/2021/10/14/bai…
“Tongues started wagging after Shea seemed to backtrack on his repeated insistence that state bail reform laws are a major reason why cops can’t stop gun violence.”
NYPD: “When you look at who we arrest for crimes, it’s going to be small numbers.”
He admitted he’s been lying.
CBS actually reports facts! “A report from the city’s Office of Criminal Justice throws cold water on Shea’s bail reform argument. It shows that 9.7% of defendants were released w/o bail for gun crimes, before bail reform was passed. It fell to 3.5% after bail reform enacted.”
This is the direct consequence of mainstream outlets like the @nytimes adopting & parroting *police lies* that they were somehow "defunded." And then after "rising levels of crime" somehow *caused by* something that never happened, they are starting to get their money back.
I wrote here about how @nytimes, like most outlets, plays a major role in perpetuating mass criminalization. Offered a roadmap for better journalism. Stop sourcing from police, stop sensationalizing, & stop allowing police to speculate about crime data. thenation.com/article/societ…
I cannot believe the NYT published a front page story 2 days ago about how police were "defunded" when every police department everywhere got increases.
Not only did NYT publish a front page story 2 days ago about how police were "defunded" when every police department everywhere got increases -- they blamed rising crime (also a lie -- only homicides increased) on "defunding" of police!
NYPD got a nice $200 million raise despite brutal, widespread beatings of the people they claim they want to protect. nytimes.com/interactive/20…
If you want to see data -- and please keep in mind this is reported from the police so take it with all the disclaimers & remember they don't report their own crimes -- here's open data consistently updated from SF police. sanfranciscopolice.org/stay-safe/crim…
Residents don’t “feel” safe because you & others are spreading misinformation gleaned from far right websites & police talking points. “Feelings” about crime, as opposed to reason, are exactly how we became the world’s largest human caging force.
