Is Netflix 's Squid Games the start of an era of gamification of content ?
A Thread Below (12)
*** No spoilers ahead so feel free to continue.
(1)
When I started watching Squid Games on Netflix last week, I began with 0 expectations. The reason: I had already been disappointed with a bunch of other hyped shows which I had to then leave in between
However, Squid Games was different...
(2)
Within the first 2 episodes, It got me hooked to the show with eagerly waiting for answers to:
➡️What will be the games?
➡️Who will win those games?
➡️Who are the people running these games? .. And a bunch of other questions
(3)
The reason: It's a game based show which does a great job of building up suspense in the first episode
The impact : Well, I binge watched the entire series, which is a rare feat for me. Well, The ending could be better but that for some other day :)

(4)
And while I will be dumb enough to call a personal experience a pattern, but turns out that I was definitely not the only one
🌟 Netflix says 87 Million of People who watched the first two minutes of the show completed the entire 9 episodes in just 23 days
Continued..
(5)
Why is this special? Well it's the highest completion rate of a show (a/c the data available to me) on the platform and this means a bunch of things
Three direct impacts below -:
(6)
💫 To start with, more people completing show leads to more positive reviews in general
💠A stat from study says that 79% of People tend to like a show more if they watch it in a go!
(7)
💫 It simply leads to more people watching it since the people completing a show are much more likely to be "active Promoters" of a show.
💠 Squid Games Recently Became the Most Watched Show in the History of Netflix
What's more?
(8)
💫It leads to patterns : memes for the show, merchandise sales, increased interest in the culture all of this contributing to make the show a classic
Is that it though? No, I believe there is a 4th benefit as well : It creates patterns in form of content.
(9)
Korean content is on a rise but so is on another game based shows
(Fun fact: "Shows similar to Squid Games" makes for 3 of my 10 Google News Recommendations right now..)
Case in point, Alice in Borderland and Sweet Homes
(10)
🌟Alice in Borderland and Sweet Home are two web series released before Squid Games but have recently noticed a >100% increase in trends after the popularity of Squid Games.
What's common between the shows? Both are game based and follow a similar pattern to the shows:
(11)
They build suspense in the initial episodes & then attempt to carry on that interest
And I believe this trend is here to stay👇
(12)
Final thoughts: After the success of Squid Games, I find it fair to suggest that we will have more shows (not necessarily game based but some other genres as well) which attempt to create an experience similar to Squid Games : Hook the viewers to know results of a "game"
End of the thread. Do comment your thoughts on the trend
Also please feel free to correct any incorrect assumptions I might have made
Thank You :)
