Excited to share the publication of our meta-analysis (including 211 000 deaths & 1.3 million) confirming that diabetes, hypertension, obesity, & smoking are associated with higher COVID-19 mortality, contributing to nearly 30% of COVID-19 death bmjopen.bmj.com/content/11/10/…
Key findings:
Patients with diabetes had a 54% higher risk of death from COVID-19 compared to patients without diabetes; those with hypertension had a 42% increase in the relative risk of death from COVID-19 compared to patients without hypertension.
Patients with obesity had a 45% greater risk of death compared to non-obese. We found that each 5 kg/km2 increment in BMI was associated with a 12% greater risk of COVID-19 death.
Evidence of non-linearity was observed in the analysis of BMI and risk of COVID-19 death with a J-shaped dose-response relation with flattening of the dose-response curve btw 22-24 of BMI and a slight increase below that range and a 1.5–2-fold increase in risk with a BMI of 40-45
Independently to other conditions, the proportion of death attributable to diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and smoking was 8%, 7%, 11%, and 2%, respectively. The absolute risk of COVID-19 death was increased by 14%, 11%, 12%, and 7% for diabetes, HT, obesity, and smoking.
Many thanks to my collaborators for their wonderful contributions.
