I'm starting to wonder if, from the time of the first March 2020 emergency lockdown, that early success - everyone in #BC uniting behind the goal of slowing viral transmission - actually terrified provincial leaders.
Because they have certainly done their damnedest to divide us - in the most callous ways - ever since.
Having slowed transmission to such low levels by June 2020, imagine if #BC had adopted #COVIDZero protocols. Seeing that we could save lives, keep ppl healthy long before vaccines became available, feeling good about this, imagine if we had stayed united -
+ felt galvanized to demand better - e.g. housing equality + climate justice, to #StopSiteC, to hold the BC NDP accountable to protect #OldGrowthForest
I wonder if this is why we were treated to that ugly #CanucksAtHome spectacle with the PHO yesterday. To underscore how divided we are. A triumphalist spectacle + an alternate reality
flaunted in the faces of anyone sick right now, their caregivers, everyone in mourning for loved ones who died of #COVID19BC, teachers & parents of kids who got sick in #BCEd despite our warnings & all who remain vulnerable & #Unsupported
Everyone who: has fewer places/farther travel to get a #COVID19BC test, w/ slow results; is asking where are the rapid tests for schools, where are subsidized respirator masks - N95s - for HCW + all others who work long hours serving the public?
Everyone who's saying, if indoor retail + dining are SO IMPORTANT FOR THE ECONOMY, hand over the damned rapid tests already, mandate indoor clean air + ventilation protocols as part of public health already.
Everyone calling for #COVIDZero who has faced condescension & insults by people refusing to follow the science, while our high death rates have become steadily normalized & global #COVIDZero success stories CONSPICUOUSLY ignored by msm.
Income inequality, high levels of racism, silence + inaction had already divided #BC for a long time. But the initial March 2020 lockdown & state of emergency created a moment of social unity; a potential opening, a chance for real reckoning.
Let the record show that our leaders closed that window as soon as they could, in all the ways they could. They took us all down w/ them into this, their #4thWave without end.
And if you feel shocked, sad, angry, or disappointed, about a stadium crowded full for a hockey game last night, you are the one with a firm grip on reality. You are entirely sane. #BCPoli#COVID19BC
