Not sure you can begin a South Carolina walk with a more South Carolina-y scene (Palmetto tree sadly fallen & out of picture) Image
Cliche #2 ImageImageImageImage
Still smells of dank tobacco from dank blunts ImageImageImage
Gonna invade North Carolina with a granite phalanx ImageImageImageImage
The Bull! Only slightly rebranded since I was a teen trying to get drunk for cheap Image
😶 Image
Is there like a Mason-Dixon Line for water towers vs reservoirs? Image
Fallen in line of duty ImageImageImage
Cotton fields, train tracks, power line, water tower. just waiting to be turned into bad song ImageImageImage
Perfecting Lives Tabernacle ImageImageImage
Old Labor union? Or some fraternal order of whatever. Or both? ImageImage
At least the sidewalk crew tried. Better than most places I been Image
Damn fly over America and their, uh, bespoke breweries making over hopped IPAs ImageImage
Long been My fav street sign. Probably because of the distress bolts shooting out from truck Image
Finding the Black community in a southern town (Florence is 60% black) means finding what side of the train tracks is lower & easily flooded
Mr Patel, owner of the store, thought I was taking pictures to sue and claim ownership of the store. Which he says has happened before 😔 ImageImageImage
Retired pumps sitting around shooting the shit all day ImageImage
Southern game: clothes line or cross? Image
Deep in Biden country ImageImageImageImage
Deep in Biden Country 2 ImageImageImageImage
Part 3 ImageImageImageImage
Think it is conveniently forgotten by elite activist in both parties just how religious working class Blacks are ImageImageImage
Southern Cliche alert! ImageImageImage
Metaphor alert! Image
Hard to see in pic (but easy to smell in real life) but local railroad workers having their lunch break with homemade bbq Image
Took a lot of weird effort to get this pic, which didn’t really come out, & I have nothing clever to say about. But I put in the effort damn it. Not going to waste Image
Dude running home to do cannibalism Image
Absolutely Great mural. Straight into my, uh, lungs ImageImage
History! To be all educated-y Image
More history! ImageImageImage
Want that welcome mat ImageImage
Ps: everyone in Black part of Florence seems to be a Cowboys fan? Any historical reason?
Man does the neighborhood ever quickly change once you cross the tracks out of the “traditional Black neighborhood” ImageImageImage
Ok. Battery dying, huge rainstorm approaching. Gonna have to stop posting & make my way home early. Enjoy!

Lot nicer (& extremely friendly) town than it seems from interstate exits
Just hard working journalist documenting overlooked wheel country Image
Metaphor alert! Image
Not sure what this architectural style is, but it feels very small southern town 60s Image
So bland it’s art Image
Sherwin Williams logo, when you really look at it, is kinda gross Image
Yard blow ups been taken to a whole new level Image
Forget Wawa vs Sheetz, when there is Cruizers Image
This is a good logo. Take note Sherwin Williams Image
So. Because of rain & battery dying I ordered ahead at the closest place, a Starbucks. When I got there lobby was closed, &!they had run out of large cups

But the manager felt bad for wet me, let me in (not enough employees showed up today), & gave me two medium coffees! Yeah! Image
I talk up McDonald’s a lot on here, but I have had nothing but great experiences with Starbucks. Employees are universally sweet, helpful, & go out of way to do their best
Ps: the absurdity of four employees working their asses off while wearing masks in an otherwise completely empty store (drive through only)
Sitting out rain trying to think what to write about Florence. Obvious is friendliness, especially in Black neighborhoods. That isn’t very deep though.

I guess, like in Buffalo & Indianapolis, what strikes me is how livable it is, especially compared to the elites image of it
Also. Just how a diverse city of “normies” being normal is so weird & confusing to the Front row.

How very very little that Front row gets right about these places. That is My continued frustration
Ps: the thing about using labels like normies, or fly-overs, or whatever, is how it always ends up being a stigmatizing or condescending term.

Because that is how it is almost always used by the Front row.

There is no term you can use that doesn’t become that
Enough punditing. Back to regular schedule silliness & pics ImageImage
A+ logo. ImageImage
You know the song…

I'm at the Huddle house (what?)
I'm at the Amoco (what?)
I'm at the combination Huddle House and Amoco. ImageImage
Also. Is there a worse second fiddle than Huddle House to Waffle House.
The dreary corner is less dreary with a dreary Palm tree. Image
30-ish yrs ago me & my wife got stuck in Florence because of a snow storm & we went to the food lion & when we got back to our room there was a 20-20 (or dateline) episode about hidden footage of mislabeled meat at Food Lion

I think this is the same one we shopped at 30 yrs ago! Image
Cotton looks very cotton-y Image
Scrubby!!!!! ImageImage
America stills makes things. Lots ImageImage
You know the song

I am at the victory temple…. Image
This is a church. Not an office park, or an accounting firm, but a church ImageImage
At my most cynical I think American economy runs on an endless cycle of making $’s getting people addicted, then more $’s treating their addictions, then getting them addicted again..

And so on and so on. Image
I hope there Xmas party is dry Image
Never know what you will find while walking ImageImage
Thanks everyone. Rain cut it down to 10 miles. Somewhere I dropped $60 bucks out of my pocket. Hope whoever finds it enjoys it.

Hope it was gutter man.

Time to dry off, write, then go get the $5 32 ounce draft Dos Equis Image
PS: Please subscribe to my Substack where I write up these walks into more thoughtful (hopefully) essays

So begins my 17 miles across Orlando. In a McDonald’s with a homeless guy & fashionable Japanese tourist. Different place (grew up near here) then where else I walked so far. Less planned, more ad hock dealing with growth

If I make it will end up somewhere north of here tonight ImageImageImage
Post coup, Official name is now Democratic People’s Republic of Chocolate Image
Man. I just wanna be kept dry & out of sun. Not part of some art project to pretend most of the area doesn’t have the feel of an airport grounds Image

Had my Substack for a month, & so far got a lot of nice feedback

When i started it didn’t known where exactly I would take it, but now I do

I am going to focus on the walking America series & since I do more in these towns than just walk expand it from just short essays 1/
So in addition to a short essay about what I saw/thought walking across X, I will add some things like “best dive bar in X” & “best strip mall ethnic food in X”, best McDonald’s

My tastes are not about best food or best IPA, but about best vibe, “ambiance, & community 2/
I don’t want it to be a normal travel thing, but I am a traveler, so. It can’t be entirely not that

Also, I will be expanding to stuff outside of US, as COVID restrictions lesson. Like walking in Quito, Istanbul, & Bucharest. And hopefully eventually a long walking in Vietnam 3/

Anyways. Join my Substack, where I write about long walks though American cities.

It’s free. Which makes it a deal.

What you hear about COVID vaccine, when traveling around, is off the wall stuff. Constantly, without asking, people offer up their views. It is like 180 degrees different from what you read in press, partly because they want to own the press. But weirder then that
I don’t wanna wade into the issue because it brings out intense takes, but suffice it to say 30%-ish of population isn’t even close to the same wavelength as current scientific view on vaccination.

Not even in same ballpark. And it ain’t just right wing Trump types. Not at all
What is most striking to me, having spent 12 years doing this type of stuff, is how people start talking about it to me. Without me bringing it up.

They want me, & others to know, they don’t plan on getting vaccinated. It has become a core part of their identity.

Next installment of Walking America? Breezewood Pa!

Fifteen miles, two days, in the most mem-ed small city in America.

Coming tomorrow (assuming I am not rained out)
I spent a lot of time in these type of truck stop/rest-stop towns. I call them places of "permanent transients."

They are some of the most unique places in the US.
Gots a McDonald’s, Dunkin, Flying J. What more do I need. Here I come, torrential downpour or not
