Time for some movie recommendations/reviews again. I have been watching a lot and am a bit behind here.
Some absolute gems and a few disappointments.
Fatma 🇹🇷
Turkish short series about a tormented cleaner who goes on a killing spree. Exceptional acting by lead actress in a highly intelligent, intense, and original series. 9/10
Black Crowes 🇸🇦
Long Arabic series that is supposed to portray live in the ISIS Caliphate. Pathetic acting and dramatic music together with thin story makes this boring anti-ISIS propaganda. 4/10
The Fury of a Patient Man 🇪🇸
Spanish thriller about an average Joe waiting patiently to take revenge on a group of violent robbers. Slow but captivating. 8/10
Clickbait 🇺🇸
This is how you make an intelligent crime series. Excellent plot, great twists, well-made, with some smart critiques of contemporary culture. 9/10
Aziza 🇱🇧
Very short movie about a man, a woman, and a car, working through the trauma of loss and refuge. 8/10
Imperial Dreams 🇺🇸
Heart-wrenching movie about a young Black father who tries to do the right thing when he returns for prison but the system is not set up for it. Incredible acting. 10/10
The Climb 🇫🇷
A young Senegalese-French guy from the Paris banlieu climbs the Mt Everest to win over the love of his life. Based on real story, this is an absolutely delightful movie. 9/10
Nigerian Prince 🇺🇸
Nigerian-American teenager is sent to his aunt in Nigeria and gets involved with his scamming cousin. Highly original and well-made movie. 8/10
They Might Comes For Us 🇮🇩
Over the top Indonesian action/slasher movie that gets boring very fast. 3/10
The Squid and the Whale 🇺🇸
Remarkable, almost un-American independent movie about a dysfunctional family dealing with a divorce. Exceptional acting! 9/10
As said, some amazing movies, which you should really watch if you can -- I watched all these movies on Netflix USA.
Tomorrow another batch!

A quick #thread to contextualize the current spike in "anti-antisemitism" in much of Western Europe. 🧵
1. In postwar Western Europe, defined by the Holocaust and still deeply colonial, #antisemitism became the main (sole) indicator of racism in general, and the far right in particular.
2. Serious far-right parties in Western Europe quickly understood this and stayed away from both antisemitism and anti-Zionism (at least explicitly).
1. Before you continue to read, let me come clean: for months I have been arguing that PiS would not accept Fidesz as long as Ukraine War is salient. So, clearly I am not a sage!
2. Even after 30 years of professionally studying it, I still seem to underestimate the sheer cynicism, opportunism, and power-hungriness of party politics.
Bart de Wever heeft besloten dat VB-lite niet meer genoeg is om VB te verslaan dus gaat hij nu voor VB-on-steroids. Absoluut verwerpelijke en gevaarlijke uiterst-rechtse propaganda!
Because some people here do value my #MovieReviews 🎥, I have decided to use a special hashtag #cmovies and post them in this #thread 🧵 going forward.
Warning: most come from Netflix US!
Short series about a woman who revenges her husband’s death in a town full of secrets. Good acting and beautiful vistas. Last twist too predictable. 🇦🇹 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Movie about traumatized musical genius and his unlikely mentor, which plays with a range of emotions and social issues without becoming usual US cliché. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
