READ THIS THREAD: Myself and several others just witnessed a homeless man get jumped by a family (clearly visiting from out of town) at the intersection of Independence Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue in DC. I was so frazzled & shocked I only recorded the moment officers arrived.
When officers first arrived the homeless man was suspected to be at fault, but it was quite the opposite. The man in this video (arrested & charged with array due to bodily harm) yelled at the homeless man - “I’m going to f*cking kill you” before pushing him to the ground.
This is the power of “see something, say something.” If a handful of strangers who witnessed the violent encounter didn’t speak up and tell police the truth of what happened, the situation, unfortunately, was almost fabricated by the actual instigator.
Thank you, @CapitolPolice, for your swift efforts and for taking the witness accounts seriously. I am glad this horrible, terrifying incident unfolded in front of a crowd of people because if not, who knows if that homeless man would still be alive and breathing.
For those of you wondering - the homeless man allegedly complimented the wife’s scarf and was mumbling. That caused the husband to get fired up causing him to curse and yell in the face of the homeless man. From there - the situation escalated.
Authorities say they received different accounts of what happened. Witnesses vs. family. It’s unfortunate the family was trying to paint a different scene. They were outnumbered by the crowd of strangers who saw what actually happened. Washington, DC residents don’t play games.
