Today we bring you an interesting story. It begins in Islampur, a small village in Sangli district in Maharashtra.
The year is 1959, a 12 year old boy is asked to take on the pampered son of the village henchman in a wrestling contest.
In an upset, the 12 year old boy is victorious and his reward – death threats from villagers who treat this as an assault on the village henchman.
This forces the boy to hop on to a goods train with money earned from the fight – a princely sum of Rs 12.
Without his parents knowledge, this boy is now in Pune and joins the Indian Army.
He takes up boxing and is seen as a rising sports star in the Army. Then 1965 war happens.
This 18 year old is sent to Kashmir to stave off enemy fire.
He is hit by 7 bullets – skull, spine, cheeks and thighs and in all this a jeep runs over him as well. He loses his memory as well.
Fighting for his life in an army hospital, he falls off his bed and in a very filmy way, gets his memory back as well.
His family finally discovers him. But by then, the young man was bedridden. The family thinks of him as a burden and refuses to take him back.
He plans to commit suicide. While waiting for the moment to kill himself, he plays table tennis with a hospital attendant and in a game of stakes wins money.
The plans to commit suicide are thrown away.
He checks himself out of the hospital, takes up competitive sport again. He does well.
The great Indian cricketer Vijay Merchant even hears his story and decides to sponsor his training.
This is how Murlikant Petkar went on to win India’s first Paralympic gold in 1972 Heidelberg Paralympics.
He not only won the gold, but also broke the world record.
He turned 74 yesterday.
Some stories need to be told.

On the occasion of @anilkumble1074 's 51st birthday - a little known story of how a very much vegetarian Kumble ate 2 bears for lunch.
Setting the stage - 1995, hot and dry summer in the county championships in England. Kumble is playing for Northamptonshire.
They were second in the table going to take on the first placed team Warwickshire. Warwickshire, though without Brian Lara, were defending champions and were leading the table at that time.
Few years later, Kumble would dismiss Lara looking like this.
Allan Lamb won the toss for Northamptonshire and decided to bat first. They were skittled out for 152 with only David Capel managing to get to a half century.
David Capel then proceeded to take a 7fer to restrict Warwickshire to 224. Remarkably 140 of them came from Roger Twose.

#OnThisDay 8 years ago a wonderful tale of love, longing and loneliness was released that featured the late great Irrfan, @NimratOfficial and @Nawazuddin_S.
August 10 will mark 20 years since the release on one of the most iconic movies of all time - Dil Chahtha Hai.
The movie saved Goa - suffering from bleak tourism following the 9/11 terrorist attacks with hordes of people visiting Goa, especially the Chapora fort for this pic.
Our thread starts with the idea of DCH - the story that @FarOutAkhtar wrote. His childhood friend narrated a story to him - which became the outline for Akash.
Farhan frequented Goa a lot and also had a memorable trip to New York in 1996 all of which were combined in the script
The film was supposed to be set in New York, but when the shooting schedule was finalized, it would have been really cold in NY.
He was quite a good singer. Check out this clip of him singing during an interview.
Though born as Mohammed Yusuf Khan - he took the name Dilip Kumar to avoid getting beaten by his father, who was strictly against films.
His father was friends with Basheshwarnath Kapoor, father of Prithwiraj Kapoor and would constantly berate him for his son's career in movies.
So when Dilip Kumar started working in films, he felt that his father will not be happy with his choice of work.
He was given 3 options - Yusuf Khan, Dilip Kumar and Basu Dev. He rejected Yusuf Khan and left the options to the others.
He saw his "name" in an ad 3 months later.
