Lemme get my rant out of the way: the rotten score is bullshit. RT has its uses but in the end it distorts criticism by reducing every opinion to a binary good/bad and then obfuscating further by simply telling the % of each. Ok, now for the movie…
#Eternals is exactly what it is: a visionary director given a giant stack of money and a limitless toy box and told to go bananas. And it succeeds much more than it fails.
Visually it’s stunning, from the costumes to the practical sets, everything pops. The sense of scale is
what stood out to me. Previous glimpses of the celestials (shoutout @JamesGunn ) have gotten close but not nailed the bullseye on their sheer scale. Zhao does that here, managing to frame them and the characters with whom they interact so as to really give a sense that #Eternals
these beings are nearly beyond comprehension in size.
Every actor has brought their a-game here. The size of the cast means several of them don’t get as much screen time as you kinda want, but they make the most of what they get.
theres no humor. There’s plenty, but it’s much subtler and more naturalistic than you may be used to from MCU films (not that I have a problem with the previous quippy mature, mind).
The film really cements marvel’s seeming intent to focus the MCU going forward on #Eternals
broken families and the ifs and how’s of putting them back together. It also tackles a lot of questions of humanity and morality, some of which it deals with spectacularly, others it kind of misses the mark. #Eternals
Without getting too spoilery, there are revelations and developments about the deviants that kinda feel like they should alter their dynamic but just… don’t.
Still it delves into questions often asked about prior events in the MCU and interrogates them in ways that #Eternals
some have been clamoring for.
The only other downsides for me were that the pace is a bit awkward. It leaps back and forth from “present” (aka 5 years forward) and past events. There’s a big exposition dump that also feels like it grinds things to a halt. #Eternals
And again, even at 2.5 hours, not all of the characters really get screen time to grow.
That said, it hits a lot more than it misses. It’s going to be divisive, both to fans, audiences, and critics. But it’s the kind of film no review can really give you an answer for.#Eternals
You really need to see it. It may be a miss for you, it may be a grand slam, but you have to see it for yourself to know which.
(THREAD) Gerrymandering is a tricky piece of business that has served R’s well in recent elections, but it’s also a big gamble and here’s some reasons why...
GMing uses two main strategies: “packing” and “cracking”. States have a certain number of districts based on population and obviously you want the biggest number because representative democracy
3/ “Packing” attempts to draw lines so that all of your opposition is loaded into a small number of districts leaving you free to take the rest. “Cracking” is the opposite, trying to spread opposition out over districts so that they don’t hold a majority anywhere
