They have known each other since they were babies, but only became friends in kindergarten after LWJ's mom died when they were 5.

WWX's parents died six months earlier and he approached LWJ, the only other person their age who knew what he was going through.

LWJ is very prickly at first (ofc) and then WWX manages to win him over through time and persistence. And then they are inseparable.

They grow up joined at the hip. Same classes, same after-school activities, sleepovers, hanging out all the time.
JC is jealous at first but grows used to it. The elders all find it cute

And then WWX presents. An alpha as expected. LWJ doesn't understand why but WWX grows very protective all of a sudden, almost over-bearing but not really because he loves everything WWX does.

WWX is always touching him, constantly rubbing his wrists, his neck, his face. Until LQR frowns at the apparent scent coming from LWJ who still hasn't presented yet.
He gets a shouting when LQR realises it's WWX's scent and a lecture on scent marking etiquette.

It doesn't deter either of them, not even when LQR calls and rants to YZY, who raises hell at home.
WWX can't help it and LWJ doesn't seem to mind.
They spend enough time of the day and night (they sleep over very very often) together that the scent can be reasoned away by-

-their constant proximity.
But then, LWJ presents. And it's a surprise to everyone that it is as an omega.
Everyone but wangxian themselves. WWX thinks it feels right. And LWJ agrees. He had always been the omega housewife when they played house together as kids.

Suddenly, everything they did together before is wrong. Suddenly, there are rules. They both get sit down lectures on alpha-omega manners which WWX rolls his eyes at (because they are just friends, okay?). LWJ's ears blush because he's new to this and he's feeling a lot and-

-he's sensing a lot of scents and he's confused and very very overwhelmed.
But he agrees that it shouldn't change the way he and WWX behave around each other. Especially not now when he can finally smell WWX's scent on him and purr at the mere thought of it.

WWX becomes even more agressive around him. They are not allowed to scent mark each other so it starts small.
LWJ presented during the summer holidays so when school begins again, WWX is suddenly exposed to a lot more people around them all.the.time.

During the summer, it was just JC who seldom touched LWJ as it is, and even less so after he presented as an alpha.
However, one time, JC did slap LWJ in the back after he scored a goal, leading to WWX letting out a small growl. JC is careful after that.

But in school, in that horrible crowded atmosphere, it's almost impossible to steer clear of people and their scents. Everyone gets too close to LWJ for WWX's comfort who thinks he will be alright if only he was allowed to cover him with his scent. He can't explain why.

He just feels protective. Protective like he feels of JYL nd JC. But they live in the same house so their scents have inter-mingled enough for him to not even get the instinct to scent them. Atleast that's his reasoning.

So he's lends LWJ his tie. It's summer and not time to break out winter clothing and school jackets. But a tie is innocuous enough.
LWJ has a tie of his own but doesn't complain when WWX asks for his. A thrill goes down his back at the small exchange in the boys' washroom.

It's small enough that no one notices beyond the students who get too close.
As winter looms near, ties become jackets, which is big enough for LQR to take notice. He scolds LWJ who takes it blank-faced but comes home smelling of WWX again.

They both go through heats and ruts with each other's respective clothing smushed to their face. LWJ lets it drop once that WWX's scent comforts him during heats and WWX takes it as an initiative to give him fresh WWX-scented clothing everytime he's about to go into heat.

WWX also drops by LWJ's house with ice cream (it helps the overheating) everytime he goes into heat. LQR doesn't let him step foot inside but staunchly takes the ice cream and delivers it to LWJ.

LWJ has long since accepted his all-encompassing love for WWX, but is okay to be just a friend. Being "just a friend" is not bad when WWX treats him better than anyone else.

It's when they are about to turn 17 that people start asking them out. Their schoolmates have figured out enough to decipher that they are not together. Some of them are even brave enough to try their luck.

Both of them are extremely eligible (ofc) but they are not prepared for the attention they get.
WWX gives the stink eye to every alpha and beta that he hears has asked LWJ out. LWJ does the same with every omega.

Finally, when one alpha has the guts to ask LWJ /in front/ of WWX, that he growls, grabs LWJ's wrist and drags him away before he can even reject the poor alpha.
WWX doesn't know why he feels so protective. He thinks it's just his alpha instincts acting up.

He drags LWJ to a corner in the back of their school building and scent marks him. LWJ holds still, his eyes closed, as WWX rubs his wrists on his neck.

LWJ goes home reeking of WWX and LQR loses his shit. He's ordered to not come out of the shower until he has scrubbed it away

He cries as he does it, hating as he smells of himself again.

He meets WWX with sad eyes the next morning for their daily walk to school and WWX's nostrils flare at the lack of his scent. He marks him again, loosening LWJ's tie to spread his scent before tying it again for him.

LWJ loves it and tries his hardest to not preen.
LQR makes him scrub it again but WWX is more stubborn. Finally, LQR bans WWX from their house and blabs to YZY who raises hell yet again.
JC can't understand why WWX wouldn't just do what his mother says. He always ends up-

-following her orders, why is LWJ the one place where he has to stand his ground?

At one point, LQR gives up. LXC who is very amused by all this gives LWJ the sex talk, who blushes and denies anything happening between him and WWX.

Now that their scents on each other are not a problem, WWX starts sneaking into LWJ's room. ("Let's have sleepovers like old times, Lan Zhan! What's stopping us now?")

They sleep curled up together, LWJ's heart beating hard, while WWX still doesn't understand why he finds this so so right.
The students at school stop trying to ask them out, an unwritten rule that they belong to each other.

WWX finally finally realises when an alpha from another school gets too handsy with LWJ, while asking him out. He finds out when he asks about LWJ's knuckles, which are red from punching the alpha.
WWX sees red.

He skips school, goes to stand outside the alpha's school and beats him to a pulp when he comes out.
The alpha doesn't even get a punch in.
(Yes every cliché trope okay)

WWX gets a week-long suspension from school, YZY slaps him, JFM is disappointed, there are threats from the alpha's family of raising charges against him but what cuts him is when LWJ stops talking to him.

WWX goes to LWJ's house but LQR refuses to let them meet. He blows up LWJ's phone but doesn't get any answers. He calls LXC who says that LWJ doesn't want to talk to him.

He spends the whole week panicking and hurting. And he finally gets it.

He finally understands why LWJ is so important to him and why the prospect of losing him is harder than anything he has faced.

The day he's allowed to go to school, he rushes to the place where he and LWJ meet on their way to school. He stands, brooding, until LWJ comes.

LWJ's face is impassive as he walks to him but WWX can see the hesitancy, the slight anger in the furrow of his brows.

"Why haven't you been answering me?" WWX accuses, crossing his arms for added effect. He is angry but he also wants nothing more than for everything to be-

-alright between them again.
LWJ scowls, looks off into space but doesn't say anything.
"Tell me," WWX snaps, getting into his face.

LWJ flashes his eyes at him, scowls harder.

"What? What did I do?"

LWJ puts a hand on his chest and shoves him back. "Why did you have to be so stupid?" he says, glaring at him.

WWX gapes at being shoved away. "You know why."

"I don't."

WWX closes his mouth, opens it again. "Don't play dumb"

When LWJ says nothing, WWX insists, "He touched you, Lan Zhan. He harrassed you. You punched him too!"

"And I took care of it."

WWX growls. "He doesn't get to away with it."

"He didn't."

But WWX doesn't hear him. "He doesn't get to touch you whenever he wants. No one does," he shouts.

"Why do you care?" LWJ asks, his voice almost close to yelling.

WWX purses his lips, looks away. "You know why," he says, his voice small.

"I don't," LWJ says again.

Everyone around them has been talking about it for years, teasing them for years. How can he not get it?

WWX takes a deep breath.

"We are- we are supposed to be together," WWX's voice gets stronger as he continues. "You hate it when any omega gets close to me. You love it when I scent mark you. You reject every alpha that asks you out. Am I reading this wrong, Lan Zhan?"

He could be reading this wrong, he might be and he has never been this scared in his life. "Am I wrong?" He asks again, when LWJ doesn't say anything.

LWJ finally shakes his head and WWX's heart falls.

But then-

"You're not." LWJ clears his throat. "You're not wrong."

LWJ goes to class reeking of WWX again with his lips swollen and a slight smile on his face.

WWX has never been so smug.
