I was going through an old box of mine and found this paper written by John Glenn, former Senator/Astronaut/Marine, on "What Being an American Means to Me".
How far we have fallen.
It reads: "Americans are people who make democracy work by respecting one another and caring about one another. They are honest and fair with their neighbors, and honor the laws made by their elected representatives."
"They reach out to help those in need and pitch in to provide schools and services in their communities. Responsible Americans inform themselves about the natural, political, and social worlds they live in, and take part in the public discourse on local and national issues."
"They exercise their right to vote, participate in grass-roots politics, and work to achieve a better future for all the people of the world. They show their commitment to democratic processes by running for public office in their home communities and serving on..."
"... local decision-making boards, councils and commissions. True Americans consistently speak out against inequality, injustice or bigotry, and they value individual freedom of conscience."
"They are respectful of our Flag and staunch in defense of the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights. Most of all, Americans are ever faithful to the timeless ideals of liberty and justice for all."
