Life lessons I learnt from Pixar's Guide to storytelling

Principle #1

'You admire a character for trying more than for their successes'

'RETWEET' if you think this is something you enjoy reading

Here we go

⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
Think about all the heroes or characters you've fallen in love with

I'll go first

Optimus Prime - The guy literally put humans and earth before
his home planet, Cybertron

John Mcclane - Fights bad guys even without any expectations
Spiderman, Superman & Batman -They Fight bad guys and try to uphold justice

even when the whole city shits on them
The examples are plenty

But the idea is one

Your character needs to fight for something more than just their success
Let's take a look at a business person for example

@elonmusk

The man literally fights for something more than just his success
Here are the goals of @SpaceX in a nutshell -

Make space travel affordable to all human beings. Pave the way for the human colonization of Mars.
Here are the goals of @Tesla in a nutshell -

Enable the world to switch to all-electric cars. Lead the way by making the transition smooth and by lowering costs.
Nowhere does he mention his goals as

Becoming the world's richest man

or becoming a Twitter influencer (the man is one 😅)
The idea is simple

If you're writing a story, a post or even building a business

Have a goal that fulfils something greater than the basic human desires.
A story where someone fights for more than just themselves

is always better

and has a greater connection with their audience.
You know what.

I'll give you an example right now

Let's consider someone named 'Jaga'.
Jaga was born to middle-class parents

Growing up they he was even able to afford food most of the times

He studies hard, works his way into an awesome college

and manages his finances with a part-time job

Till he gets a job in a tech startup
Once he gets his job, he works hard

climbs the ranks

and eventually becomes the VP of software development

He later falls in love with a girl

Marries her

has kids

grows old

and dies a peaceful death
Now let's add a short twist to the story

Jaga makes it as the VP of software development

He falls in love with a girl

but even when everything is going right

He feels that he misses something

He looks at his old neighbourhood and sees that nothing much has changed
He wants to change things

So he quits his job

Starts an app development agency that hires people from his neighbourhood and community

He builds a successful business with his team of misfits

This helps his community get on its feet
He gets married to the love of his life

Works his ass off to start multiple businesses and charities, to help his community

Eventually, his people are finding jobs in good places
They are getting good opportunities

everything is better

and everyone is happy (including Jaga)
Now

I need you to tell me which story sounds better

The one where Jaga did nothing more than work for his own success

or the one where he worked to uplift others as well
Which story was impactful?

The one where he married, had kids and left the world without changing much

or the other one where he still married had kids

but left the world a much better place than when he was here
I'm sure the second story strikes a chord with you

and this is because the main protagonist fought for something more than just his success

That's principle #1 in action
Pixar's Principle doesn't just make a great story

It makes a better world

Done right

This principle can also help you build a successful business or a solid following

It helps the algorithm and definitely helps fuel my ego 😅

I've also challenged myself to build a following of 10k on Twitter by the end of this year

Yes, that's not even 50 days away!

I read the 13 paradoxes of Modern life by @david_perell

That got me thinking about the paradoxes we face as content creators

and one of the most famous paradoxes is

QUANTITY eventually paves the way for QUALITY

Here's a thread exploring it

⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
But what is a paradox?

I believe this picture explains it better
The paradox of 'Quantity gives Quality'

I've heard many modern creators and writers mention "quantity paves the way for quality"

But higher quantity effectively means lower quality

Trying to increase quality with the same bandwidth has an inverse effect on the quality
