It's amazing that we've got this whole national dialogue about "free speech" & "cancellation" & "self-censorship" -- all these vague generic terms -- when the real issue has always been is that people want to be able to say racist & homophobic things without consequence.
These cases are never about differences over economic policy or the nature of human rights or the proper form of gov't or whatever. No one's ever "cancelled" for that stuff. They're all about racism & homo/transphobia!
It would be 1000% more honest if we just debated what we're debating: "have racism and homophobia been excessively stigmatized? Should we socially sanction a little more racism & homophobia?" That's what this is all about. It's telling that the people pushing it hardest ...
... will absolutely never say that, perhaps because, when we leave behind abstractions & euphemisms, signing on becomes a bit more uncomfortable.

This is like ... anti-journalism. The public a) already knows gas prices -- the signs are everywhere, b) overestimates the significance of gas prices relative to other econ metrics, c) thinks politicians can "solve" high gas prices. With one image, this purported journalist ...
... has failed to clarify any of those misunderstandings & indeed likely exacerbated some of them. Rather than inform the public, it reinforces their folk myths in a bid for man-of-the-people authenticity.
This is also true when talking heads discuss deficits or gov't budgets or wars or the stock market or so many other subjects -- rather than correcting common myths & misunderstandings, they echo them. It "sounds right" to the audience & creates affinity/clicks/views.

Scott Alexander read some biographies of Hungary's Viktor Orban & wrote them up. It's a quick (& amusingly written) way to catch up on who Orban is & where he came from. A few sentences jumped out at me ... astralcodexten.substack.com/p/dictator-boo…
"He was neither exceptionally bright nor exceptionally charismatic."

"Viktor Orban is a man who almost automatically believes in the veracity of whatever he considers to be politically useful to him."

"He shamelessly gerrymandered unequally sized districts."
"Whatever the reason, anti-immigrant measures in Hungary were polling around the mid-80s-percent. For Viktor Orban, who really likes winning, co-opting the issue was a no-brainer."

Putting this back out there. Dems can't organize against RW propaganda because, for any given bit of propaganda ("parents just spontaneously discovered CRT on their own!"), it is helpful for some Dem faction in its forever war against some other Dem faction.
If you're in the faction invested in the "Dems are too identarian" narrative, then the notion that parents just spontaneously rose up against woke curriculum is helpful to you. It advances your factional interests. So you ignore the man behind the curtain.
I remember when "liberal hawks" used to point at public polls that showed people freaking out about WMD & say, "see, the people agree with us, you pacifist elitists!" They had every incentive to ignore the RW agitprop machine that was pumping out lies about WMD for months prior.

I've given up on understanding this, but: it looks to me like House progressives gave up whatever leverage they had & agreed to move both bills forward despite everyone who wanted to fuck the BBB still wanting to fuck the BBB. Nothing else changed. "Leap of faith" wtf.
I have no energy left to be pissed about hypocrisy, but it's pretty spectacular that the very House Dems who have relentlessly hacked away at the revenue side of BBB are now pretending to be concerned about its CBO score.

I wonder if letting 50% of what this country calls "media" be taken over by explicit right-wing propaganda was a bad idea after all.
I've tried to say this a million different ways. Here's another: the vast bulk of voters are not responding to what actual Dems actually say & do. They are responding to a ghoulish caricature that is ubiquitous on Fox, Facebook, etc. The VA election turned ...
... on the lie that VA grade school teachers are teaching CRT (which voters also only know as a series of lies). Barely any voters are well-informed about the national RW assault on voting rights & democracy. Few have even the faintest understanding of the real Dem agenda.

I bet McAuliffe would have an easier time tying Youngkin to Trump if the entire left had been repeating the message that "Trump=GOP & GOP=Trump" from the second he won in 2016. But that woulda been uncivil I guess.
One of the right's enduring advantages is that they've spent 30 years propagandizing against the Democratic Party (& liberalism) *as such*, so every single Dem starts out behind the 8 ball, dealing w/ a whole set of negative assumptions.
There has been no commensurate effort to make "conservative" toxic or to smear the GOP brand. Oh sure people have said things, but the D party, the left as a whole, simply doesn't have the wherewithal, capacity, or killer instinct to mount a sustained campaign like this.
