This is my 1st grader’s self portrait for the art show. Like him, majority of kids drew themselves masked. They only know school as masked. Our family doesn’t proactively mask elsewhere unless it’s required, so to him school means masks & learning means only seeing eye balls (1/)
Masking to be educated is how these kids see themselves. This isn’t a new revelation for me, of course, but seeing it visibly across these portraits was still jarring. I research (worker) identity as part of my day job, so I know that “how I see myself” matters. (/end)
