1/ I've decided to do an #FM22 Thread 🧵

The main reason for the thread is to keep me focused on the save, hopefully improve my writing, & might be of mild interest
Anyway, the first few tweets of this thread will lay a background and set the rules.
2/
I am going to start a save with Oldham Athletic. This is in part the challenge and because as a fan of the entertaining & always informative @POF_POD, the demise of many old northern clubs at the hands of poor ownership is a loss to many local communities.
3/
Oldham start with a transfer ban, so no signings in the 1st window. There is little (even for EFL L2) in the way of budget/finances, minimal staffing & an underdeveloped youth structure. A few local rivalries will keep it interesting too.

Ok now for some rules:
4/
• Avoid loans (1 exception*)

• Accept all bids meeting / exceeding asking price

• Strict wage structure, limit max no. of players on key contracts

• do not pay fees for players with <5000 senior minutes (>50 senior games)

• Sign players under the age of 25.
5/
• look for players listed/undervalued

• avoid paying above market value

• no contact >12months for players over 30 years old

• keep contracts between 2 ~ 3 years. (Club option allowed)

• avoid transfers in first window (not an issue on this occasion)
6/
• no contract renewals in first 6 months.

• Aim to use local markets and undervalued markets
(With Oldham, I plan to keep the majority of the squad from the surrounding area / north England, and in particular will aim to utilise academy cast-offs from big clubs)
7/
• build tactic to utilise current squad.

• build tactic to 3 key principles (More on this later)

• Always be forward planning, knowing bids for my star players will be accepted.

• Develop my own staff. (i.e. send for badges / training, contract retiring players)
8/
OK, now for my Tactical Principles:

DEFENSIVE PRINCIPLES [ideally built on a back 3]-
• Compactness
• Restrict Space
• Force Wide
9/
Key to this defensive structure is ;
•opposition heat maps [Mostly wide areas, and kept out of the box]
•key passes [should be mostly from wide areas]
•Complete Pass [Again, mostly in wide areas]
•Incomplete pass &
•Arial Challenges [both within my 18yd box]
10/
ATTACKING PRINCIPLES;
normally I am a huge fan of strikerless (inspired by @MerryGuido ) but on this occasion I will not force it, at least initially.
• Verticality
• Aggression & Pace
• Multiple Runners (Layering)
11/
Key to this attacking structure is;
•Shadow strikers [layering runs]
•Attacking (or very) Mentality [create tempo]
•Overload [flexibility in the formation to overload opposition]
•Deep playmakers to free up runners [Ideally a 'Libero' but this is LLF so??]
12/
TRANSITION PRINCIPLES;
• Move the ball early
• Pressing Triggers
• Defensive Anchor / Pivot
13/
I won't be using a 'Gegenpressing' setup as such, all but the best can actually manage this for a whole season, but I will utilise a pressing player like a BWM to force the opposition into errors, break up counter attacks, and allow regrouping. This could also be utilised to
14/
press a 'weak' player in the opposition e.g. someone playing out of position / on weaker side. In terms of attacking transition, using 'Attacking' mentality will hopefully create urgency. Early crosses, deep playmaker & attacking runners will hopefully
15/
complement the drive forward. Again, this is Lower League Football so I won't be expecting Pirlo-esque arrows every time, so the passing directness will be dialled back a tad (also to avoid hoof-ball). Possession wont necessarily be a key metric though.
16/
Anyway this starting thread is already too long and dull, so I will be adding screenshots and updates periodically. If you have read this far, Thank you! -

Please feel free ask questions or chip in with opinions.

Namaste.
