The White House is hosting a big Tribal Nations Summit this week, in part to talk about improving justice for Native Americans.

In this light, a Q I have is whether Biden has considered granting clemency to Leonard Peltier. I tried to ask in today's WH briefing, but no dice.
If you are a tribal leader participating in this week's White House Tribal Nations Summit and you think clemency for Leonard Peltier is something worth talking about with the Biden administration, I'd love to hear from you:
Who is this Leonard Peltier guy, you may be asking?

He's a Native American activist the FBI + US Attorneys Office put in prison 44 years ago based on lies, threats and no evidence that he committed a crime.

He's still in prison. Why?…
Did I mention that the U.S. Attorney who helped put Peltier behind bars in the 1970s wrote to Biden this summer telling him the U.S. govt had no evidence that Peltier committed any crimes, and pleading with Biden to release him?
Copy of the U.S. Attorney's letter in here. First time it's ever been made public.

“I write today from a position rare for a former prosecutor: to beseech you to commute the sentence of a man who I helped put behind bars."…
"We were not able to prove that Mr. Peltier personally committed any offense on the Pine Ridge Reservation.”

“I urge you to take a step towards healing a wound that I had a part in making.”

Just an incredible letter.

Morning! ☕️

Today, the White House is hosting its 2-day Tribal Nations Summit. This event has the full attention of the White House: Biden is speaking. AG Garland. Interior Sec Deb Haaland. Fauci. Becerra. Cardona. Lots of others.

Livestream here:
I'll be watching for news on lots of things: On efforts to address missing + murdered Indigenous women; on Indian boarding schools; on protecting sacred Indigenous sites.

And possibly, even a *hint* of a willingness to release Leonard Peltier from prison.…
Interior Sec Haaland is speaking now.

A reminder that in 2020, as a congresswoman, she called for Leonard Peltier's release from prison.…

In light of Youngkin's win last night, I'd just note the role that Senate Republicans played in trying to help him win by ginning up fear, anger + transphobia over a misreported sexual assault incident in a Virginia school.…
During this Judiciary Committee hearing in late Oct, nearly every Republican focused on a May incident involving a teenage boy sexually assaulting a teenage girl at a high school in Loudoun County, Va.

This was a hearing for a nominee to a California-based U.S. court seat.
I did a whole thread on this at the time because it was bizarre and made no sense why Senate Republicans were doing this -- until you considered what they were doing in the context of the tight Virginia governor's race.

Sens. Leahy (D), Durbin (D), Manchin (D) and Murkowski (R) just announced a bipartisan compromise on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

"This proposal ... reflects months of bipartisan negotiations and seeks to garner broader support in the Senate."
Here's a summary of the key changes to this compromise bipartisan bill:…

Good morning! ☕️

Last night, with little fanfare, the Senate confirmed the first openly LGBTQ woman to a lifetime seat on a U.S. appeals court.…
Beth Robinson, who's been an associate justice on the Vermont Supreme Court since 2011, now has a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
Every Democrat present voted for her.

Only two Republicans did: Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins.

Oh look, the GOP's much-publicized case of a sexual assault in a Loudoun County, Va. school is not at all what they said it was.

It had nothing to do with transgender-inclusive bathroom policies. But Republicans feigned outrage that it did.… via @aterkel
This was not a case of a teenage girl being ambushed in a girls' bathroom by a "gender fluid" teenage boy.

It was 2 teens who had been regularly using the girls' bathroom for consensual encounters, and then one of these encounters apparently turned violent.
News of the incident was picked up, twisted and amplified by conservative media, which said this was evidence that policies allowing students to use public bathrooms that match their gender ID put girls in danger.

Total garbage.

Good morning! ☕️

In case you missed it, last night, Senate Democrats confirmed longtime voting rights attorney and advocate Myrna Pérez to a lifetime seat on a U.S. appeals court.…
Perez's confirmation comes at a time when voting rights are under assault nationwide.

Republicans in 19 states have enacted at least 31 new laws THIS YEAR to restrict voting rights -- primarily targeting people of color -- and overhaul elections for their own partisan gains.
Not a single Republican senator voted to confirm Perez.

These are the same Republican senators who have now blocked voting rights legislation 3 times this year.
