8 months ago today I watched with horror the Atlanta shooting targeting AAPI victims. Today, I’m watching @WuTrain sworn in as Boston mayor, watching @AftabPureval about to become Cincinnati mayor, @BruceforSeattle winning Seattle mayor. So Proud. THREAD. wgbh.org/news/local-new…
I love that these amazing wins are getting so much attention, but I also look forward to when it is totally normal for AAPIs to win. We aren’t just a new generation of AAPI leaders, we are American leaders. Our stories are not just AAPI stories, they're American stories.2/6
What these wins show is that AAPIs can win not just in areas with large AAPI pops. We can win anywhere in America. And we have as much right as anyone else to represent anywhere. AAPI pop in Cincinnati is only 2.2%. Boston is 10%. Seattle about 15%.

When I ran for Congress, many political experts said I couldn’t win a district that was less than 3% AAPI. I won my last election by over 7 pts. I refuse to let others define what I am or am not capable of accomplishing simply because of my skin color. 4/6 inquirer.com/news/new-jerse…

I also hope all of us recognize the value of having a government that looks a lot more like the rest of America. Not just AAPIs, but the full diversity of America. We should never assume that someone else will fight our fights for us. Time to step up! END

When I see the vitriol/hate that members of congress spew at each other online, I sometimes need to remind myself that these are actually my coworkers. It’s surreal that people whose job description is in the constitution would promote anger/violence. Why does this happen? THREAD
RISE OF PERFORMATIVE GOVERNANCE: “If you aren’t making news, you aren’t governing.” This quote from a colleague sums up much of what I see wrong at the Capitol. Attention itself is not the commodity of governance. Our job is supposed to be about bettering lives. 2/10
Beyond the conflation of attention with meaningful contribution, we also see the consequences of the deep political stagnation over years. As the dysfunction that prevents the kind of real lawmaking grows, the role of social influencer becomes more enticing. 3/10

Last night @60Minutes did segment on a college I attended that has only 26students doing manual labor on a cattle ranch while studying great books. Deep Springs College. This improbable place is where my journey to Congress began. My story and photos I’ve never shared belowTHREAD
I applied to Deep Springs without my parents knowing. My sister told me about a school next to Death Valley where students ride horses, hire professors, and run admissions to select next class of students. 13 students get accepted a year for 2yrs. Everyone goes for free.2/15
The school is premised on the belief that education isn’t just in the classroom. I learned as much from operating the dairy (milking cows, churning butter, making yogurt/ice cream) and growing our own vegetables as I did studying history, philosophy and literature.3/15

A mysterious group called Healthy Future LLC is spending a ton of money spreading lies that I want to cut Medicare. Who are they? I looked up their address in Stafford VA and found this storefront in a strip mall. Hmmm...Let me tell a story of dark money and lies. THREAD Image
A Healthy Future is blasting ads and stuffing mailboxes and inboxes with lies. What I am actually trying to do is lower drug prices through negotiation, set out of pocket maximums, and give everyone on Medicare vision hearing dental coverage. We are strengthening Medicare. 2/11 Image
So why is this group not talking truthfully about efforts to lower drug costs and instead lying about cutting medicare? The answer is that efforts to lower drug costs are very popular with Americans, and they know that. See new poll today ⬇️3/11

I’m in the shadow of the Washington monument looking out at 676,286 flags on the day this pandemic became the largest mass casualty event in American history. I didn’t realize families of those lost wrote personal messages on flags. It hurts to read. Here are some.THREAD
676,286 is too large of a number to conceptualize in our minds. That’s why it’s surreal to see so many white flags. Each is a person lost. Each represents a family devastated. 2/6
I remember reading about the 1918 flu when I was a kid in school. It seemed so far away in history. Felt like something that could never happen in modern times. I would think crazy that tragedies like that used to happen. But now we are living through something worse. 3/6

WHAT NEXT? Many of us are deeply frustrated that we could not evacuate all Americans who wanted to leave Afghanistan. Now we need to hear specifics on what the plan is to get them out and continue support for Afghan partners. Here are some ideas for what happens next. THREAD
MAINTAIN TASK FORCE: State Dept must keep Afghanistan task force operational. There are major logistical challenges remaining and so many citizens/Afghans that still need help. Urge State to commit to keeping their 24/7 operation going. 2/11
IMMEDIATELY CONTACT CITIZENS: I know citizens left in Kabul including 4 yr old. They wanted to leave. Many were stuck at airport gates last night. They didn’t procrastinate. They, like our embassy, wanted to believe it wouldn’t all unravel so fast. They need constant contact.3/11

As we hit 72 hours away from Biden’s Aug 31 deadline for ending the evac mission, I’m still hearing from American Citizens, including a child, in Kabul that are terrified of being left behind. This is their story(protected) and why we must complete the mission. THREAD
I was alerted earlier this week to a family trying to flee, one of over 10,000 evacuation requests sent to my office. This family is a mix of American citizens/green card holders. They were outside one of the airport gates. They begged for someone to come out and get them. 2/13
There was a “crush of people” ahead of them. They have little kids and were concerned by the chaos surrounding them. But they didn’t want to leave because they were mere feet from reaching safety on the other side of the airport wall. 3/13
