Welcome back to #USCCB21.

Bishops will now vote on a couple of liturgical things.
+Blair (of Hartford):
First discusses petition (request) to allow St. Teresa of Calcutta, Mother Teresa, to be added to the calendar in the Church in the US, to be celebrated as an optional memorial on Sept 5.
+Blair:
There is one small thing -- there needs to be some modification to the texts used in the Office of Readings which is not yet ready.
If the bishops approve this petition, they have to send it to Rome (CDWS) to be approved.

Requires 2/3 of Latin members.
+Wenski:
Is Calcutta spelled Calcutta or Kolkata, and which one should we use in the liturgical calendar.

+Blair:
The Holy See uses "Calcutta" so we would too.
A bishop (didn't catch who): the Spanish virgin of the collect talks about "Santa Teresa, virgin" but there are many. Could we add "of Calcutta."

Also, better to use a word for people who are suffering other than "afligidos," which doesn't connote what we're going for.
+Blair:
Well, we usually use a short version in the collect.
With regard to the question of "afligido..."

Carmen: This comes from the Missionaries of Charity. I'm not sure we can change it.
+Blair: Yes, its an important point that the prayer doesn't originate with us.

#USCCB21
+Ricken:
I am in favor of this. There is a great devotion to Mother Teresa, and we would be served by adding her to our calendar.
+( don't know, +Gomez said it kinda quiet and he's across the room)
Why is this an optional memorial instead of obligatory?

+Blair:
That's been our standard practice.
Bishops will now vote on whether to petition to the Holy See to add the optional memorial of St. Teresa of Calcutta as an optional memorial in the liturgical calendar of the US
The ayes have it.

Bishops now to vote on Holy Communion and
Worship of the Eucharistic Mystery Outside Mass.

This governs exposition, benediction, and distribution of HC outside of Mass.
Bps accept amendments proposed for acceptance by the committee by consent motion.

Bishop Seitz asks 1 amendment the committee proposes to reject to be considered on its own.

Other amendments proposed for rejection are rejection by consent motion.
+Seitz wants to discuss proposed amendment that would strike the option for Divine Praises that is not in the editio typica.

He also wants to strike an option that notes a US custom to include Benediction well before reposition of the Blessed Sacrament.
+Blair:
We are noting the customary practice of the U.S., which is consistent with practices in other countries.
JD-
This debate is about the US practice of having benediction, the Divine Praises, and then reposition.

The grey book recognizes this custom. Seitz wants benediction and then reposition.
By voice vote, bishops asked to vote on amendment. But the conclusion is unclear. So we will have a hand raising vote.

Aye means rejecting the amendment, for procedural reasons.
The ayes have it, the amendment is rejected.
Sorry for the ambigious explanation. The USCCB used to give us the documents being voted up, which would have helped me explain what's going on. But this year we are not given the draft documents.
Bishops now to vote on the ICEL grey book translation of "Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharistic Mystery Outside Mass."
The translation passes. We have a new ritual book, everybody -- well, after confirmatio from the CDWDS
Latin bishops will now vote upon the revised English edition of the Order of Christian Initiation of
Adults
The ayes have it.
Latin bishops will now vote on the Spanish-language version of the same text, the RCIA.
+Nevares, aux of Phoenix:

We should capitlize "cristiana" and "adultos" in "Ritual para la Iniciación cristiana de adultos

Carmen:
No, that would be true in English grammar, but we decided to follow the rules of Spanish grammar for the Spanish text.
Bishops laugh. a lot.

I'm going to a new thread. It's Eucharistic document time.

At #USCCB21, bishops will now debate "The Mystery of the Eucharist in the Life of the Church?"
It will work like this. They will be asked to consider some amendments by consent agenda, but could propose them for individual consideration. That could lead to debate. Then after that, they would debate the whole doc.
+Biegler asks for specific debate on an amendment proposed by +Cordileone. That amendment calls for a mention of the unborn in a list of "vulnerable people."

Good morning! Welcome to Day 2 of the public session of #USCCB21. I'm JD, and I'll be your live-tweeter this morning.
The bishops are now praying morning prayer. I have had three cups of coffee, some scrambled eggs and bacon, and a bowl of fruit. Which is to say that I am ready for a great day here in Baltimore. Hope you are too.
And please allow me to offer a warm welcome to those bishops who follow these live-tweets FROM the meeting. Some of you have been kind enough to mention this to me, and I am grateful.

Hey everybody, we are back for the second half of #USCCB21's afternoon session:

+Caggiano is introducing a slate of candidates to be on the board of Catholic Relief Services.

Candidates:
+Broglio, AMS
+Hying, Madison
+Perez, Phl
+Solis, SLC

Broglio and Solis are incumbents.
3 outta 4 will get elected. Seems kinda sad for Bishop Number 4.
The winners are:
+Hying
+Broglio
+Solis

Their prize is a seat on the CRS board. Which actually does sound kinda fun if you're nerdy about the stuff I'm nerdy about.

The bishops are now beginning the afternoon session of #USCCB21. So buckle in.
In front of me in the press gallery is @natemup, who runs the @BlkCathStories. It’s a cool journalism project.
On the agenda today is presentation/discussion of several action items, including *the* Eucharist document. The bps won't vote on those items today, but they will be able, if the meeting follows ordinary practice, to ask questions.

The bps will also elect cmmttee chairs.

I don’t have the bandwidth today to cover the “Bishops: Enough is Enough” rally next door to the bishops’ meeting. But I went over on the lunch break, and here’s some things I saw.

Ok everyone. Greetings from the opening public session of #USCCB21.

The bishops have not gathered in person since Nov 2019.

Quoth Frozen: “Yes, the wind blows a little bit colder. And we’re all getting older.”
So we begin:
+Vigneron begins meeting with silent prayer for "all those who have been affected by Covid."

"May you O God in your mercy in love be pleased to give the sick health...the dead eternal rest...workers protection, and the discouraged consolation and peace."
