You know reading books is good for you.

But do you know WHY?

Here are 10 science-backed health benefits of reading books:

(thread) 🧵
1. Reduces Stress Levels

Researchers at the University of Sussex found that reading for 6 minutes reduced stress levels in subjects by 68%.

Reading a book was more effective at reducing stress than playing video games (21% reduction) or taking a walk (42% reduction).
2. Boosts Overall Happiness

A recent survey of 1,500 adult readers found that 76% of them said that reading improved their life and helped to make them feel good.

Adults who read for just 30 minutes a week reported feeling 20% more satisfied with their lives.
3. More Professional Opportunities

An Oxford University study looked at the reading habits of 17,000+ 16-year olds & what job they had by age 33.

The kids who read books outside of school were more likely to have managerial positions as adults than those who didn't read.
4. Improves Sleep Quality

Doctors at the Mayo Clinic suggest reading books as a screen-free and quiet way to settle your mind before drifting off to sleep.

Reading also helps slow down your brain waves and puts you into a state of relaxation that sets the stage for good sleep.
5. Prevents Cognitive Decline

A study by Rush University Medical Center found that people who engaged in mentally stimulating activities (like reading) were less likely to develop the plaques and lesions found in the brains of people with dementia.
6. Strengthens Your Brain

A small 2013 study found that reading a novel increased communication between parts of the brain that control language processing.

Reading also creates neurons in the brain, a process known as neurogenesis.
7. Increases Grades & Intelligence

Exposure to more books led to higher scores on reading tests and also higher scores on general tests of intelligence for children.

Stronger early reading skills may also mean higher intelligence later in life.
8. Increases Emotional Intelligence

According to research published in Science, reading books has the power to help people better understand what others are thinking by reading about other people’s emotions.

Reading literary fiction books was especially effective.
9. Improves Communication Skills

Studies show that avid readers possess a larger vocabulary & more fact-based knowledge which lends itself to communicating better.

The more words & stories one knows, the better they are able to communicate clearly, concisely, and compellingly.
10. May Help You Live Longer

One study followed 3,635 adults for 12 years & found that those who read books lived 2 years longer than those who didn’t.

It also concluded that people who read more than 3.5 hours per week were 23% likely to live longer than those who didn’t read.

Once you've seen this visual, you'll never think of 1% as a tiny number ever again.

Although 1% is small, it compounds over time. 1% better every day for a year is not 5x or 10x better, it's 37x better.

Small changes can lead to huge results.

Every area of life is ruled by the 80/20 principle.

80% of your results come from 20% of your effort.

Ex: 80% of your revenue comes from 20% of your customers.

Find the source of the 20% and focus on that to become more productive.
