I want to lift up @UAW workers today! You represent a movement that is making its way through our country right now. A movement to prioritize workers rights w/ reasonable requests: dignity of work, fair wages, & retirement benefits that allow workers to provide for their families
In Iowa, UAW workers spent over 30 days striking for their rights. As I walked the line with members and supporters in Ankeny, Davenport and Waterloo, I listened to their stories.
They made tremendous personal and professional sacrifices in taking this stand in order to secure a better future not only for their union brothers and sisters, but for anyone in the workplace, and the next generation of workers.
Through all this, these men and women knew that Iowans were standing with them - on the line, through donations of hot food and hand warmers, and in solidarity in living rooms and on social media.
Pauses in production means loss of paychecks and profits. Companies across the country should take notice of this movement now: it takes both sides to fight for common ground and we need employers now more than ever to show up in good faith and prioritize working people.
John Deere eventually met workers at the table to accomplish a shared goal: getting Iowans back to work, now with the benefits they deserve.
The UAW workers represent the best of Iowa’s values. Resilience in the face of adversity, strength to fight for what is right, and the determination to be part of something bigger than yourself.
These are the values I see in Iowans as I travel the state, talking to workers, farmers, educators, parents, healthcare professionals, retirees, and students alike. Iowa is part of this movement to make our communities better, to make our state work for each of us once again.
To all UAW members, I commend your fight and look forward to continuing to work together. You are worth the work. #UnionStrong #WorthTheWork
