When Sulaiman Ibn Abdul Wahhab [d.1794] commenced his response to his younger brother’s invitation letter, he purposefully used the same ‘salam’ used by the Prophet ﷺ to the False Prophet, Musailimah: “Peace be upon whoever follows the guidance.”

...السلام على من أتبع الهدى
This demonstrates the subtle wisdom of our Sheikh ul-Islam, Sulaiman, may Allah have mercy on him, and the gravity of the situation that the ulema faced: namely, resisting and refuting the call of MIAW, who was seen as a false prophet, and his organisation a cult.
“[The Wahhabis] oppose Muslim Orthodoxy and the madhabs while leading the Ummah astray, declaring the blood & wealth of Muslims halal for spilling and seizure. This group took filthy, dark doubts & used them to surround people.”

~ Hanbali, Dawud ibn Sulaiman Al-Khalidi (d.1881)
Imam Dawud Al-Khalidi (d.1881) was a grand Hanbali theologian of Baghdad. So profound in learning, he was given authorisation to teach all Islamic sciences. He also preached to Christians, 12er Shia & refuted the Wahhabis in his: “Al Minhat ul-Wahbiyya fi Radd il Wahhabiyya.” Image
“Ibn Abdul Wahhab has declared [Muslims] to be kafir and… their blood and wealth licit for spilling and seizure... May Allah curse whoever has this creed, for indeed, whoever declared a believer to be a kafir has already committed kufr.” ~ Hanbali Sage, Hasan ash-Shatti (d.1858)
“Sulaiman, the brother of Mu􏰂ammad was also opposed to his mission. He refuted him with verses of the Qur’ān and h􏰂ādīth... However, Allah protected Sulaiman from the evil and deception of his brother.”

~ Cheif Qadi of the Hanbalis, Imam Muhammad ibn Humaid al-Najdi [d. 1878].
Ibn Abdul Wahhab rejected the statements of all scholars “other than Ibn Taymiyyah and his student Ibn al-Qayyim, despite the fact that the sayings of these two figures contradicted what he understood.”

~ Cheif Qadi of the Hanbalis, Imam Muhammad ibn Humaid al-Najdi [d. 1878].
“If [MIAW] was unable to kill openly, he would send someone to assassinate him in their bed or in the marketplace at night, since he judged whoever contradicted him with takfir & legalised their killing.”

~ Ibn Humaid [d. 1878] OFFICIAL BIOGRAPHIC work on Hanbali scholars, p.680 ImageImage
“He [MIAW] does not possess one characteristic of the people of ijtihad. By Allah, indeed he does not possess one tenth! Yet he is opening his mouth and speaking a great deal of ignorance!”

~ Sulaiman Ibn Abdul Wahhab [d.1794], Sheikh ul-Islam, Older brother of MIAW.

The first issue is that Shawkani didn’t appear to support MIAW in his lifetime. The date cited in wahhabis evidences (1215AH) is after the death of MIAW. (Plus, Shawkani, along with other Yemini scholars retracted this mistaken support. But that’s a later point.)
The second issue regards his religious identity. It’s very difficult to detach Shawkani from Shia-Zaydiyyah because he was born, raised & educated in this tradition. This is a fact, no matter how much Salafis edit his biography and works to be a staunch Salafi through & through.

Ibn Qudāmah al-Maqdīsī رحمه الله stated:

From the Sunnah is; Loyalty to the Sahābah, love for them, mentioning their good qualities, and asking Allāh to grant them mercy and to forgive them. And [also] refraining from mentioning their bad qualities and what they differed in,
believing in their virtues and acknowledging their superiority.

It is permissible to attack the kuffār at night, to use a catapult against them, and to start fighting with them before calling them to Islām. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took Banī al-Mustaliq by suprise

In the mid 18th century, Ibn Abdul Wahab’s forces depopulated towns, destroyed hamlets, killed scholars and executed men/women. They made mass takfir on towns like Huraimila where his brother, Suleiman, was chief Qadi. Numerous assassination attempts were made on Suleiman’s life.
“Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab and his followers are people of innovation because they contradict all of that which has been handed down.”

~ Hanbali Scholar & Judge, Muhammad Ibn Fairuz [d. 1801] responding to Wahhabi da’wah just prior to the movement’s bloody invasion of Mecca.
Hanbali Imam Isa Al-Qaddumi (c.1774) was instrumental in preaching against the Wahabbi movement, delivering letters to and from ulema, warning about their impending plight. This Imam, like others, classified the Wahabbi movement as Khawarij.

Scholastically speaking, Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab was as qualified to speak on matters of religion as a post-millennial YouTuber.
This seems like a joke but it is not.

Hanbalis have a 7 tier hierarchy of scholarly rank ranging from Absolute Mujtahid (the four Imams), down to Muslim laity (YouTubers, Ibn Abdul Wahhab and myself).
Ibn Abdul Wahhab is never mentioned amongst the in-house ’tabaqat’ biographies of Hanbali scholars, which have been recorded since Imam Ahmad, as he was never inducted into the scholarly chain of transmission. His brother, Sulaiman, who condemned him, is.

Ulema of Ibn Abdul Wahhab's day were clear:

"There has appeared in our land a man who is an innovator, ignorant, astray and leading others astray... causing the disruption of knowledge, and cutting off piety from people's hearts."

~ Najdi Qadi, Sulaiman ibn Suhaim [d. 1773]
"Whoever does not agree with him [Ibn Adul Wahhab], then he judges them with having committed major kufr... So in reality he is calling to the Tawhid of himself rather than to the Tawhid of Allah."

~ Najdi Qadi, Sulaiman ibn Suhaim [d. 1773] (Scholar at time of ibn Abdul Wahhab)
"Who did he [Ibn Abdul Wahhab] get this information from? Was it revelation? Did he see it in a dream? Or did Shaytan teach it to him?... we need to have the matter explained before his false thoughts come into the souls of people."

~ Najdi Qadi, Sulaiman ibn Suhaim [d. 1773]
