Now that the newly admitted advocates have recovered from the effects of their celebrations, let me offer them a few tweets of advice.
First, congratulations, and welcome to what used to be a noble profession. Best wishes in finding jobs and postgrad schools! 1/6
The best way to succeed in your career is to read widely. (I hear there are other ways, but I am not familiar with them.) If you’d sworn never to touch a book after KSL torture, let that be the first and only oath you break. (Well, you may break one more - your marriage vows.)2/6
Get yourself a mentor or two - a career mentor and a social/financial mentor. While you must do your own exploration and thinking, your mentor will help you clarify your thoughts and guide you based on their experience. Learn from them, but you must make your own decisions. 3/6
If you can, specialise in one area as early as possible. Generalists are not respected as much as specialists. Specialists command higher incomes. It is difficult to specialise if you do not get work in the right place, but try and brand/market yourself into your chosen area. 4/6
When welcoming us to KSL in the mid 90s, Principal L Njagi (later Judge) told us “the only monkeys that think there are too many monkeys in the forest are the ones at the bottom”. Consider exploring areas that are not flooded: risk management, compliance, technology, etc etc 5/6
Remember my first tweet? We were once a noble profession. Now you only need to attend one LSK meeting to see just how chaotic, tribal, and political the profession has become. Standards are low. Ethics out! Our word is no longer our bond. Be the one to restore honour. Namaste.6/6

So, here are my random thoughts on @Kenyajudiciary. The Judiciary is cut from the same fabric as the other arms of government. The people in it come from among us. They are not immune to our national psyche, attitudes, and biases although they have a higher duty to avoid biases.
The result is that malaise, corruption, mediocrity, tribalism, undue influence by religion, and all other biases that you see around, afflict the judiciary too. That is why, for instance, the Court of Appeal threw out Repeal s.162. It’s also the reason Chapter Six is dead.
The Constitution requires that the Bill of Rights be interpreted in a manner that expands rights, not limits them. What did the C of A do in the gay rights case? Influenced mainly by religion, and possibly culture, they limited rights where they should have been expanding them.
A SHORT THREAD. A friend who tested positive for Covid-19 in December 2020 and is now fully recovered told me these were his survival tips, and they worked. I didn’t ask whether they came from a doctor. In any event, this is not medical advice. /1
