Bellingcat delved into the German-language QAnon ecosystem to track the conspiracy's spread in Europe.

Trends observed included an interest in open source investigative tools that appeared influential in creating new & potentially harmful conspiracies.

bellingcat.com/news/2021/11/2…
The research gathered millions of posts from Telegram channels that regularly shared QAnon-related content. Image
It found that many of the same conspiracies, as well as mantras encouraging self learning and independent online discovery popular in English language QAnon communities, were also apparent in German language QAnon channels.
These behaviours are highly unlikely to be unique to Q followers in German speaking countries.
However, analysis of how the open source tools had been used offered an interesting insight into the regional evolution of QAnon and how it has been adapted for German language audiences.
It also provided some textbook examples of how not to conduct open source research or investigations.
Google Maps, for instance, was used to falsely bolster an online claim that a 2020 shooting in the Austrian capital, Vienna, was faked.
It was also seen being used by Q enthusiasts to promote panicked claims of child abuse for which there was no evidence. Image
Other tools to be frequently mentioned and used by German language Q followers included flight tracking sites, patent databases and business registries.
Some posts promoting theories devolved from the mis-use of these tools had racked up tens of thousands of views. Image
Despite that, most German language Q enthusiasts observed by Bellingcat did not appear to consider themselves open source researchers in the traditional sense, or even be aware of the field.
The term “open source investigations” is not common in the German language and many Q enthusiasts simply referred to their own “research” (recherche), with that word appearing tens of thousands of times in posts.
This is also a regular refrain in English language QAnon communities as well as in other conspiracy movements such as those associated with anti-vaxxers, Covid-19 truthers or 5G theories.
To be clear, not all of the theories found during Bellingcat’s German language research were borne from poorly conducted open source research.

But some of the most popular and far-spreading were.

Today, Bellingcat & @the_ins_ru publish “Inside #Wagnergate” – a year-long investigation that establishes the circumstances around the Ukrainian operation to capture dozens of mercenaries who fought for Russia-supported military entities in Eastern Ukraine bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
We have established that the elaborate sting was conducted by Ukraine’s military intelligence service, GUR MOU, with support of the domestic intelligence agency, the SBU.
The plan was presented to Ukraine’s political leadership in June '20 & approved in early July '20
But the decision to delay the op in late July led to its spectacular demise
The mercenaries were detained in Belarus before they could be captured by Ukraine & repatriated to Russia

Bellingcat has identified the individual who fell from a window of the Russian Embassy in Berlin & died as the son of FSB's Director of the Directorate for Protection of Constitutional Order, the same FSB squad that follows and poisons Russian dissidents.
bellingcat.com/news/2021/11/0…
German intelligence sources told Der Spiegel that they suspected the diplomat, who served as a second secretary at the embassy, was in fact an undercover FSB officer and was related to a high-ranking FSB general. spiegel.de/politik/deutsc…
Car and address registration data from leaked Cronos databases freely available on the internet shows that the diplomat was registered at the same address as the general both in Moscow and, previously, in Rostov where the family hails from.

Documents from the Russian Department of Internal Security newly acquired by @the_ins_ru and Bellingcat appear to acknowledge that data used by our investigative team is legitimate data of FSB officers from cellular phone operators.

The documents examined by Bellingcat and @the_ins_ru relate to a criminal case against a former fitness trainer who obtained data from cellular operators with fake documents. ImageImage
These documents run counter to the statement from President Putin that documents used in our investigations are “legalisation of foreign special service materials”

A few weeks ago, we asked our readers where they would like us to send one of @planet’s satellites.

Now we’re publishing the results. bellingcat.com/resources/2021…
@planet We ran a poll of four options (suggested by readers) and initially planned to capture only the winner. This turned out to be the Al Watiyah Airbase in Libya.
@planet However, we liked the runners-up so much that we captured them too. These were Jiangnan Shipyard in China, the La Palma Volcano and Diego Garcia.

How can we tell whether the posts, articles and claims we see on the internet are true?

As this guide to social media #verification explains, it doesn’t need to be difficult. bellingcat.com/resources/2021…
Sometimes, a critical mindset and a close look at the context of an image or post are often all it takes to discover whether a piece of content is genuine.
Verification is key to a lot of the work we do at Bellingcat.
