“If you think he’s illegal, we can make him disappear.”
Yesterday the Washington Post released a bombshell report on Trump's ICE contracts. What they uncovered is horrifying, and absolutely worth reading in full.
1. The police departments who've partnered with ICE through these contracts are the worst of the worst.
Joe Arpaio loves the 287(g) program. Sheriff Terry Johnson does too, because he thinks Mexican's "values are a lot different — their morals — than what we have here.”
2. These contracts don’t just lead to immigrants being torn from their family. They also create a climate of fear, terrorizing entire communities.
Every trip outside the house becomes a nightmare: “The moment I put the keys in the engine, I’m risking not seeing my mama anymore.”
Racial profiling is rampant: “Officers would target people that were Hispanic and Latinx from the community. It wasn’t just violent crime — it was anything.”
And so many undocumented people are terrified to seek help, even when their lives are in danger:
"In January, a leak of liquid nitrogen at a poultry processing plant killed six people... Several of the victims were undocumented, and survivors, also undocumented, were afraid to seek medical help or assist in the investigation.” nytimes.com/2021/01/28/us/…
3. Biden & DHS Secretary Mayorkas are breaking their explicit promise to cancel Trump’s ICE contracts, and they don't want to admit it.
To quote WaPo: "Biden promised during his campaign to end the Trump administration’s historic use of 287(g), but no plan has been announced."
ACLU deputy legal director @WangCecillia: “The Biden administration is walking back its campaign promise.”
And the admin's response to this devastating article?
“A spokesperson for Biden did not respond to a request for comment.”
We can't let them keep pretending this issue doesn't exist.
Biden promised, in writing, to cancel Trump's ICE contracts. And DHS Secretary Mayorkas could follow through with the stroke of a pen tomorrow, if he wanted to.
On Monday, December 6th, we'll be back in the streets of DC to send a simple message to Biden and Mayorkas: #KeepYourPromises on immigration, and #CancelTheContracts. If you're in or near DC, sign up to join us!
The last few days have weighed heavily on our hearts, as we watch the heart-wrenching loss of life in Israel/Palestine.
As a movement of Jews, immigrants, & allies, we have many among us who are experiencing personal grief and fear for the safety of friends and family.
1/
For those in our movement who have Israeli loved ones, this level of violence may be horrifying and unprecedented.
For Palestinians who are part of our movement and in our communities, this kind of grief, loss, and violence is likely devastatingly familiar.
2/
The brutality and displacement that Palestinians have had to endure from Israel’s ongoing occupation takes place on a daily basis, and has spanned generations.
3/
In the last few weeks, we’ve seen the Biden administration revive the illegal Trump-era asylum transit ban and consider reinstating migrant family detention.
Apparently all those promises made three years ago about protecting migrants…didn’t mean much.
BREAKING: We're back at the house of DHS Secretary Mayorkas, and we brought receipts.
In these 115 boxes are Trump's 115 ICE contracts, which the Biden administration promised to cancel. Instead Mayorkas has kept them in place, turning local police into extensions of ICE.
NOW: Instead of coming out of his house to dialogue with us, Secretary Mayorkas has sent the Secret Service outside to destroy our message to him.
We brought 115 of Trump's ICE contracts, which Biden promised his DHS would cancel. Instead, they continue to terrorize immigrants.
BREAKING: The Secret Service just tackled Kendra and Hallie to the ground.
Their crime: stacking Trump's ICE contracts outside the home of DHS Secretary Mayorkas, calling on him to cancel them like he promised.
This is how the Biden administration responds to accountability.
❌ The CDC concluded there was no public health reason for banning & expelling immigrants
⛔️ Pence pressured the CDC to start Title 42 anyway to stop immigration.
New testimony in congress shows that a CDC agency head refused to sign the order because it was clear this was just an anti-immigrant power grab. coronavirus.house.gov/sites/democrat…
The Biden administration is simply continuing Trump policy but refusing to admit it's for Trump reasons. But the evidence is clearer every day. thehill.com/policy/healthc…
