Blown away by the support for this announcement. I promise I'm going to do the education, parenting, and gaming communities proud!

Here's my "Why?"

I want my kiddos, and those around the world, to grow up in a world in which @COPEgg has achieved it's goals. ImageImage
At different points throughout human history, media formats like television, movies, radio, and even books were considered the scourge of society. Today, gaming has taken up that mantle.

But just like in the past, we know games are not the bogeyman they're often positioned as.
Games are art. Games are science. Games bring us together. I see it everyday. The research supports it.

@COPEgg is dedicated to raising awareness of the positive impacts of gaming. But the mission is even bigger than that.

C'mon @zoesqwilliams, this is a terrible take, and pandering to an audience you know will lap up anti-gaming rhetoric.

Can we stop trading in long disproven tropes of games being pointless and concerns about their violence having negative consequences?

There are fair points about the grind in some games, but you can raise concerns about mechanics without language dripping in derision and sarcasm.

I understand this a column, not news, but this is designed to stoke fear and outrage amongst a population already prone to that.
"Is this a useful life lesson, to find meaning through shooting others?"

The research has shown time and time again this isn't the case. Including this language is incredibly problematic, reductive, and false.

Unless your reasoning was to generate clicks and pitchforks...

🌿THREAD It's a good day to remind folks that while the cannabis industry is booming, ~40k people are currently incarcerated for cannabis "offenses."

Did you know that Black Americans are 264% more likely to be arrested for possession, despite similar usage?
As more states decriminalize and legalize cannabis, Black entrepreneurs are again getting shafted. In 2016, of the 15 companies chosen to grow cannabis in Maryland, all 15 companies were white-owned.
So now we have Black people disproportionately arrested and incarcerated for cannabis "offenses" and white people reaping the benefits of decriminalization, legalization, and capitalization. This cycle plays out time and time again. When we talk about white privilege, this is it.
