How did Covid affect academic work in the Netherlands? The study that @belle_derks, Lidwien Poorthuis and I did for @DeJongeAkademie and @LNVH_NL is out today. Here is the full report, in the thread I will share some key findings and recommendations. 1/13

The results are based on a survey where all academic workers (PhD, researcher, prof, etc) could participate in. About 6,000 people provided information on how the first lockdown (March-June 2020) affected their work and well-being. 2/13
First, we find that of the different tasks that academics have, they reported the largest losses in research time. *All* academics saw average losses in research time, while some groups spent more time on teaching and management. 3/13
While there were research losses for all academics, they were about twice as large for parents--both mothers and fathers. The loss was largest for those with young children, indicating that those with heavy care duties gave in most on their research time. 4/13
These groups then also reported the largest family-work conflict. The gap is large (about 1.5sd), and larger for mothers than fathers. It's important that although we looked at care for children, these findings likely extend to everyone with significant care duties. 5/13
Different workers experienced different stress: young scholars were worried about their future in academia, whereas those with heavy teaching duties (lecturers, assistant/assoc professors) reported stress about having way too much work. Everyone was stressed about research. 6/13
While the reported loss in research time was similar between men and women, they reported different stress levels. Women with children were most stressed about their research, being overworked, and future in academia. We found similar gaps between Dutch and non-Dutch workers.7/13
Younger workers (PhDs, postdocs, tenure trackers) expierenced large delays. Many of them reported to not having applied for grants during the lockdown, and this was particularly true for young scholars with children. 8/13
Finally, for those in leadership positions it was a challenging time too. They found management to be more diffcult during the pandemic, and not everyone felt enough support from their organisation. 9/13
Just like other workers, those working in academia also had difficulties with the pandemic. However, there are two things that are important to note. First, academics gave in most on research whereas that's exactly the thing that they are evaluated on most. 10/13
Second, for young academics the effects can be more detrimental as we know that early career success is important for their future careers. And specific groups (those with heavy care duties, women) require extra attention to make sure that they don't leave academia. 11/13
In the report we do several suggestions to circumvent negative effects (change evaluation criteria, extend time on tenure clock/grant eligibility for those with heavy care duties). 12/13

Erg verbaasd over het frame dat @ginnymooy hier gebruikt. Als scholen dicht moeten omdat er geen andere uitweg is, dan moet dat. Maar scholensluitingen verantwoorden door te stellen dat het wel mee valt met schade aan jongeren is onwetenschappelijk. 1/10

Ze stelt dat er weinig bewijs is voor leerachterstanden. Zonder duidelijke voorbeelden te geven trekt ze de hele onstane literatuur in twijfel met verdachtmakingen: slechte opzet, studies doorstaan peer review niet. 2/10 Image
De studies die ze bespreekt zijn zeer selectief. Rapport vd Onderwijsinspectie (geen peer review) is één van de minst sterke naar leerachterstanden. Daar werd aan kinderen zelf gevraagd of ze achterstanden waren opgelopen. Vrij veel kinderen dachten dat het wel mee viel. 3/10 Image

Ik zie dat dit draadje over het "eindeloze gezeur" over leerachterstanden veel geretweet wordt. Het staat echter vol met verkeerde informatie en verkeerde aannames. Bovendien wordt het belangrijkste gevolg van een schoolsluiting genegeerd.

Vier grote misvattingen: 1/9
1. "Het valt wel mee met de leerachterstand." Dit is onjuist. Met een flitspeiling onder schoolleiders uit mei wordt dit geconcludeerd. Slecht onderzoek. Als we kijken naar echte leerprestaties zien we dat kinderen *minimaal* 2/3 minder hebben geleerd: osf.io/preprints/soca… 2/9
2. "Het gaat maar om een klein stukje van totale schoolleven." Leuke rekensom, maar dat zou alleen een argument zijn als je op elk moment in je leven even veel kan leren. En dat is een volledig foute assumptie. Juist jonge kinderen leren veel, en leggen de basis voor later. 3/9

In April I collected data among 800 Dutch parents on how they felt able to support their children with schoolwork while all Dutch schools were closed. Unsurprisingly, first results indicate very large differences between socio-economic groups. A thread with some key findings: 1/7
Primary schools were closed for 8 weeks and now re-opened partially. Secondary schools are still closed. In this period parents are/were primarily responsible for schooling. Virtually all parents find it important that their kids keep up with schoolwork. 2/7
But while almost all parents find schooling highly important, their is a large social gradient in the extent to which parents (a) feel able to help their children and (b) help their children with their schoolwork. No gradient in importance. 3/7

Velen lijken het idee te hebben dat het verlaten van de selectie in het onderwijs van 12 naar 15 jaar een slecht idee is. Maar wetenschappers hebben hier veel onderzoek naar gedaan.

Een draadje met de belangrijkste bevindingen:

Landenvergelijkend onderzoek laat zien dat in landen waar vroeg geselecteerd wordt sociale herkomst een sterkere voorspeller is van onderwijsuitkomsten. In landen met vroege selectie speelt sociaal milieu een grotere rol. Hier een figuur obv data van @HermanWerfhorst en mij: 2/11 Image
Dit komt ook naar voren uit de overzichtsstudie van @HermanWerfhorst en @JonathanMijs: in onderwijssystemen waar vroeg geselecteerd wordt is de kansenongelijkheid groter. 3/11

Teletekst, @trouw en @NOS pakken groot uit met dit nieuws. Ik heb het bericht gelezen en ongeveer 70% van de berichten gaat over dingen die *niet* onderzocht zijn. Dit lijkt mij bij uitstek een voorbeeld van hoe er geen verslag moet worden gedaan over onderzoek. 1/10
Het nieuws: leerlingen zijn minder geinteresseerd in schoolvakken en hun cijfergemiddelde daalt iets. Er is geen link naar het onderzoeksrapport, dus deze claims zijn niet te checken. Ook op de website van de onderzoeker (Qompas) is dit niet te vinden. 2/10
Bij mij rijzen wel meteen vragen over representativiteit: Qompas is een commerciele partij die deze data (vermoed ik) vergaard heeft via een studiekeuzeprogramma. Het doel van deze dataverzameling (vermoed ik) was niet een zo goed mogelijke afspiegeling krijgen. 3/10
