James Purnell held this post in the mid-Noughties. In 2003, vile child abuse images were found on his computer. A fall guy, Paul Doggett, was soon found and Purnell was cleared of involvement. But what halfwit of a Culture Secretary would grant unfettered access to his computer?
Interestingly, the fall guy ploy was adopted in the case of Purnell's close friend Peter Mandelson. When Operation Ore suspected him of trawling the web for child-abuse images, a Welsh student was pulled out of the hat who allegedly had claimed to be Mandelson.

Purnell's own PPS Jonathan Reynolds, later to succeed him as MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, liked to hobnob with local paedophile Stuart Hall and his mate (and possibly accomplice) Tom Pendry.
