Tomorrow @ 6:30pm ET, @tom_sachs and I are discussing the auction of a 1/1 Rocket NFT, which is @ChristiesInc x @opensea's first ever completely on-chain auction.
The Rocket is named ‘Through the Night Softly’ and is the ONLY Miami Vice branded Rocket in the entire collection. The auction opens at 5pm ET tomorrow 12/2 and ends 24 hours later on 12/3.
At the same time as the auction, @tom_sachs will be launching 75 Physical, real life, one-to-one twins of existing Rocket NFTs.
The final Rocket to be launched will be the one up for auction, ‘Through the Night Softly’. And the auction winner will be able to push the launch button alongside @tom_sachs.
It's striking how polarizing this tweet was and if you're tempted to try to dunk on it, I'm sorry to say it will not age well: @cdixon is absolutely right.
Blockchain is not only the proven tech to do it, but the timing with a critical mass of online community and culture gives it the opportunity to actually work. Internet culture is culture. That was true a decade ago when the front page of Reddit was the next day's news.
This probably feels laughable to people because it's such a massive shift for anyone who doesn't live in online culture & community *and* hasn't also seen crypto dramatically evolve in the last decade to do Remarkable Work.
Had a call w a very smart investor who dismissed NFTs, trading cards, collectibles as Beanie Babies + I nearly fell out of my chair, but I get it, if you're not tuned into the power of culture (esp internet culture) this all looks like a fad, a blip. I need to do a video on this.
and FWIW those Beanie Babies are still worth something... but yes, the supply massively outpaced the demand + cultural value...
"But what about all those worthless NFTs being created? Most of those are going to go to zero."
Yes, I agreed, 99.999% are going to be worthless. But 99.999% of ALL paper is worthless, but the medium isn't flawed, it just hasn't got art from Picasso on it.
Leaders lead. Sadly, though, most would rather wait until the community outcry is so great that they're forced to make the hard—but correct—choices.
We've seen it time and time again. It's not easy for really hard decisions with big impact, but the test I use is a personal one: "can I defend this decision to my daughter one day?" The answer needs to be "yes" before I can consider a course any further.
And when that comes back a "Hell Yes", I know in my gut that hard decision will lead to more good outcomes that I/she'd be proud of. Life's hard decisions become a lot easier when I look through that lens.
Grail Acquired. @OnlyAltOfficial just secured the most valuable trading card in the world: a 1/1 @StephenCurry30 (his rarest card). The gag is that even at $5.9M today, it's going to look like a steal in 10, let alone 25, years. This is a new era for contemporary art.
A simple thought exercise -- this is a $91M sculpture. It's beautiful, seminal work of Jeff Koons.
How many kids or grown adults have ever shouted at the top of their lungs as Jeff Koons was making his art? These beautiful pieces of cardboard capture icons in an age where cultural moments are being created on courts + pitches + fields in real-time for the world to see.
