Pretoria | I was shocked...I was thinking what are we going to do as we hadn't seen, for quite a few weeks, COVID patients anymore: South African Medical Assn Chairperson, Angelique Coetzee to ANI
She was the 1st to alert govt scientists to possibility of a new variant- #Omicron
Infectivity rate in South Africa was less than 1%. We did expect cases but more towards Dec end-Jan beginning in the festive season. So, this was premature for us. I started to test patients coming in with symptoms not typical of a normal viral infection: Angelique Coetzee to ANI
I thought that maybe it can be a viral infection but when we tested, it was COVID positive. Specifically around 18th, I saw more patients with more or less the same symptoms. I alerted advisory committee. Our labs &
RTPCR tests found a strange thing going on: Angelique Coetzee
Last week it was confirmed that South Africa saw a new variant. I think this variant has been around for some time. May be not in South Africa but in other countries because other countries are seeing quite a high rise in their numbers of infections: Angelique Coetzee to ANI

It has over 30 mutations, very different from Delta-Beta. When scientists announced the new variant, they stated they don't understand everything yet:Angelique Coetzee, S.African Medical Assn Chairperson&1st to alert govt scientists to possibility of a new variant- #Omicron, to ANI
They are just sequencing it.What we do know at this time is that RT-PCR tests will be able to pick it up, Rapid Tests will be able to confirm that you've COVID&if you look at clinical symptoms&that symptom isn't same as Delta, you can safely assume it's #Omicron:Angelique Coetzee
If you look at clinical picture again, we know that as viruses evolve they tend to become less severe. However, we were not sure because of the 30 plus mutations. So, for now,if we look at the clinical picture, at primary healthcare level it's mostly mild cases: Angelique Coetzee

Some respected leaders&members of this august House, in their wisdom, chose to describe the suspension of 12 members as ‘undemocratic’. I have struggled to understand if there was any justification in that kind of a narrative being propagated but could not: Rajya Sabha Chairman
Latest suspension isn't the first time to have happened. Such suspension of members, starting in 1962 happened on 11 occasions till 2010,further to a Motion moved by Govts of the day. Were all of them undemocratic? If so,why it was resorted to so many times?: Rajya Sabha Chairman
While calling this suspension as undemocratic both within&outside the House, not even a word being said about reasons given for suspension, the disdainful conduct of some members during last session, which I have categorically called as ‘acts of sacrilege’: Rajya Sabha Chairman

Does Mamata Banerjee not know what UPA is? I think she has started madness. She thinks entire India has started chanting 'Mamata, Mamata'. But India doesn't mean Bengal & Bengal alone doesn't mean India. Her tactics in the last polls(in WB)are slowly getting exposed: AR Chowdhury
Political game of communal polarisation played together by BJP & Mamata in WB is getting revealed. BJP changed its stance over NRC, it ended with polls. Showing the fear of NRC they wanted to benefit in the polls. So, BJP agrees with whatever Mamata Banerjee says: AR Chowdhury
'Miley Sur Mera Tumhara, Toh Sur Bane Hamara' is the stance of Mamata Banerjee today to keep BJP happy. UPA Govt had 6 ministers from TMC. In 2012 Mamata Banerjee had made some excuses to withdraw her support to UPA. She had wanted to break the UPA govt at that time: AR Chowdhury
